I could be as simple as needing a new power supply.  *Crossing fingers!*

+1

Prolly power supply. That's usually a "burning smell" symptom.

Power supply?  As in the UPS?  Or internally?

And yes, if I didn't have the music book...and several other fun pursuits (gardening books anyone?), I'd be really miffed that I finally got some free time and poof!

I'm in a similar boat.....mine won't even get into BIOS (forget about Windows)....pffft.
Hopefully, all you have to do is replace the power supply (internal) and get everything up and running.

Best of luck!!

Phooey indeed.
The power supply is located where the power cord connects (in every computer I've owned). Remove a few screws and it should slide right out.

UPS?  Try plugging directly into a known-good outlet at the wall just to rule out the UPS as a cause.  You can also plug something into the UPS to verify that it works.  Once you know it's good, you can plug into the UPS again.

yup... if you suspect the UPS just plug straight to the wall. If nothing happens than it's likely the power supply.

Hope you get it running soon.

And yes..... you do need to clean the dust out of the vents and cooling fins once in a while.  I work with some computers that do a specialty job.... running a life safety security system. If the vents get clogged, and the CPU fins too.... the computer server will crash and blue screen due to the heat build up.

Keep those vents and fins clean.   Those fans suck in the dust.

Most modern power supplies have a cut out for overvoltage or overheating. Once that trips it will usually not restart until it is re-set. The symptom is that nothing at all happens when you press power on, no fans no lights no beeps. On a rare unit, there may be a button to push, but on most PS's you need to unplug it from the wall wait a short while then plug it in again and it will re-set. Probably not your problem, but if it is, it is a very cheap fix.

Oh, and blow out the dust.

They run on magic smoke. When the smoke gets out you have to take it back to the wizard so he/she can put new smoke back in. Sounds like the magic smoke leaked out.

Yeah, and make sure you put snake oil on the bearings too...
