I have a short .avi video I'd like to post and would like
to know the best place to upload it where folks here
could view it.
I don't want to use youtube...I'd like it to be for just the

if I were going to do what you are trying to do, I'd use youtube.  you can set the video up to allow only certain email addresses or youtube login to see it.

then you could either add people individually who ask you for permission by giving you their email address, or you could just set up a bogus gmail account and give that email out to anyone who wants to see the video that you want to share it with.
 
edit;  I realize you originally said you didn't want to use youtube, so if you already knew you could do this with youtube, then my apologies - I do have other suggestions...

I didn't want to spend much time messing with video. I did some quick
research and youtube seems to be one.

Easy and quick viewing from here leads to youtube.

The "privacy" isn't that big a deal...I was thinking like "Box".
I'll check a couple of options this eve.

Ah, ok.  Box.net might be what you want, then.  I've never used it, but I've watched videos and streamed audio from it before.
