... to a moment in time, or maybe to a memorable part of your life?

This is one of mine, it just gets me every time I hear it: The Lotus Eaters - The First Picture Of You

I can even smell the sea air at Criccieth, and hear the waves lapping on the beach.

Life was about as good as it ever gets.

Sadly, I don't even have the 'picture' any more.

there are a lot of songs that take me back.  some invoke memories, some invoke smells, even physical things (heat, air, etc.. )

Well there was this one time when we were teenagers and we had eaten these strange mushrooms and listened to that most famous YES album as we drove to a place called Pine Creek in Red Rock National Park. Now whenever I hear that album... I get a flashback.

Yeah.

Oh,,, you want details....?

Low spark of high heeled boys..... playing on the PA when I walked into the first concert I attended... Black Sabbath in the Spectrum in Philly..... in 72

I wanna hold your hand.... my house in NJ when my brother and I made guitars out of cardboard and a fence slat with kite string.... (air guitar with a prop)

Michelle by the Beatles...... Michelle in school 71-72

Smoke on the water... my first battle of the bands..... disaster of a night, but fun none the less.

Anything by Al Green.... my time in the marine corps especially in Puerto Rico..... several of the guys in the barricks played Al's stuff ALL THE TIME.

Steppenwolf's "Monster"...the turmoil of the late 60's..... listen to that song now and it is still pertinent.

Swinging..... John Anderson (country) the house gig I played in the 80's.... it was on the jukebox and on our play list.

So many more tunes and each one has a memory and a place or person attached. Some elicit memories of smells, tastes, pictures in my mind.....each one unique.

Ain't it funny how a simple song can do all that?

Roadhouse Blues--(thanks for the reminder, Herb) friends of mine had a garage band just after high school.  I did sound/lights/roadie stuff.  We entered a battle of the bands contest.  I think we were doing pretty well.  We were half-way through a Status Quo-influenced version of Roadhouse Blues when someone cut the power!  The drummer was loving it because he got an instant solo.  They found the mains and turned the power back on and we finished the song and the set.  We thought we did better than the other bands, but one band brought all of their friends, so they won the popularity contest.  Oh, well.  They were great at playing but not so good at marketing.

Maputo--David Sanborn & Bob James.  In the late '80s-early '90s, some friends had a terrific jazz band that played Sunday afternoons at the Long Beach Rusty Pelican.  Good friends.  Good music.  Good food.  Good scenery--the restaurant was right on the marina.  It was a great, relaxing way to finish off a weekend.

+1

Some I don't even like because of the memories invoked.  Mostly though they are just puncutation marks in lifes long sentence...

I love music!
