Would be great for us mackie control users to be able to select a buss using the hardware as we can already in the track view..currently in track view on the mixer selecting a track goes to and highlights the track in sonar..but the busses dont have the same feature.

You can. Under Control Group you have "Tracks AUX and Main". Select AUX for buses.

Ah thanks john for the reply..I didnt mean switching from track/aux views where the faders show the busses or the tracks...I meant you cannot use the track select(button above the faders) when in aux mode... but you can in track mode.
Unless someone knows a way around this??

From the source code of MCU plug-in:

// MIX_PARAM_SELECTED only works for tracks

That is no longer true (it works in modern Sonar), but the check is still there and so plug-in does not select the bus.
Note, that is still "select" it for internal use on MCU, it is just not indicating that on Sonar side.

Dear Azlow,
I've noticed that you've been tremendously helpful in getting other SONAR users through some pretty tricky issues. I am revisiting a long-standing issue, and I need your guidance on the best approach.

I am using a full-size Behringer X32 with Platinum, and I happily mix in the box. I want to experiment with out of the box mixing, and either way, I have always wanted to control the busses with the built-in Mackie Control functions on the rightmost set of faders. At this time I don't want to bite into the complexities of OSC and using the left set of 16-fader layers.

My intent is to re-configure my X32 from its current 32-input, 8-out-from-SONAR into simply 32-outputs from SONAR's 16 stereo busses, and (as a first step), simply capture the mix onto the USB stick on the X32.  After getting comfortable with that, I'll figure out the X32 routing to be 32-out-from-SONAR, and 8-into-SONAR to do the resulting out-of-box mixing without the clumsiness of importing from a USB stick.

The problem has always been in getting a way to allow the Mackie Control function of the X32 to run the busses instead of the tracks. Can you help?

If it's better for me to join your forum and discuss it there, then I'll do that.

Thanks.

May be we can solve the problems without big effort. Stock MackieControl in Sonar can control either tracks or buses (or outputs). The mode is switched by dedicated buttons on MCU, marked (on the unit) as "TRM", "Save" and "Undo" (Sonar overlay has "Track", "AUX", "Main") there.

If the answer here is still correct: http://forum.music-group.com/showthread.php?1736-Mackie-Control-emulation-control-layout-and-use : "assign DAW Remote commands to the ASSIGN section on the X32", you should be able to assign some X32 buttons in "ASSIGN" section to send corresponding messages:
"Track" - Note 76
"Save" - Note 80
"Main" - Note 81

In case you need some changes in the MackieControl, we can discuss that. That is Sonar "official" plug-in, I guess we can continue to use this forum.

Thanks a million for the prompt response. I did the Assign as indicated, and verified the information in this very handy chart (see link).
http://www.midibox.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=mc_protocol_mappings#dokuwiki__top

I am unable to verify that the MIDI note actually makes it into Sonar.  In an open project with Mackie Control Surface engaged, I can move the WAI indications up and down the tracks with the Bank and CHN controls I have configured in the Assign section, but the MIDI notes don't have an effect.

  1. [ Assignable controls, set-B, Button-6=MIDI Push/Note/Channel-01/Value=76]
  2. [ Assignable controls, set-B, Button-7=MIDI Push/Note/Channel-01/Value=80]
  3. [ Assignable controls, set-B, Button-8=MIDI Push/Note/Channel-01/Value=81]

I tried enabling a MIDI track for recording in that same project, and set its input to be the XUF_USB port and MIDI channel-1 that the X32 Remote function is using. However, no MIDI information ever arrives at the track. It's possible that some kind of filtering is happening in Sonar to prevent the MIDI Note info from ever arriving, and it's possible that the USB connection itself isn't implemented in a standard way in the driver.

I'll try later tonight to change the X32 setup from Card MIDI (USB) to 'normal' DIN MIDI In/Out, through my iConnnectMIDI2+ interface to see if that makes a difference. Should I be able to record the MIDI that comes in through the Assign section of the X32?

Ok, I'm back from an ugly adventure.

I installed MIDI-OX so I could verify whether the correct MIDI Note strings were coming from my Assign settings. I learned that the Assign implementation is incomplete ('notably' incomplete if you like puns).

While lots of other commands will emanate from the X32's XUF_USB connection, *none* of the MIDI Note settings work on any channel or note combination in set-B or set-C that I have tested.  Since there was no mention of a fix for this in the new 2.16 firmware that was just released, I think that I'm still stuck.

I checked at the Behringer X32 troubleshooting forum and there are at least 3 threads that dead-end with no answer to this problem of incomplete implementation.  If I was desperate enough, I'd figure out a way implement a MIDI translator utility within MIDI-OX to change some working string (like Remote/Trim) and turn it into the needed Note commands.  I don't like the potential for trouble and the general hack approach to doing something that already appears on the menu of an otherwise excellent machine.

I'd like to know what my options may be.

I have my own chat for MCU with Sonar functions: http://www.azslow.com/files/mcu.png

All buttons on MCU are Notes. If X32 can not send them, that mean you can not assign any without trick.

But note that when some MIDI input is assigned to MackiePlug-in , you can not record it into MIDI track. Just imagine you record a MIDI track and move some fader (for backing track). Since quite often you have input set to Omni and faders are sending PitchBend, the result will be "creative"...

An option is to modify MackieControl plug-in (it is open source) to use some other MIDI messages for these (may be more) buttons. I can do this without problem, but there are several notes:
1) I am away from home, so I can create that mod only after 2 weeks
2) This plug-in was developed quite long time ago and I am using recent build chain (Visual Studio 2015). So the result is not binary the same, can have some problems. I have published one of such moded binaries, so you can test either it works: http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3311275
3) You will still need some MIDI message triggered by buttons, but as I understand you can assign something which is then delivered.

Yes, I realized (while exercising at the gym) that it would be devastating to allow the Mackie Control MIDI messages to show up in a normal MIDI track. When I returned home, I installed MIDI-OX as a diagnostic tool.

I just updated to the latest 2.16 firmware in the X32, and there's been no change. That fact is posted in the X32 Troubleshooting Forum. I'll move this workaround discussion to your azlow.com forum, and once you return from your travels, I will have figured out some useful buttons in the Assign section that may work for my needs.

Thanks again for your willingness to help.
