Still no sound when I click keys on the keyboard
If I click the tracks input echo on I do see the result of keyboard presses

Alienware laptop with Windows 8, otherwise this works with MC7

I would recommend disabling the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth in MIDI Output Devices and use the TTS-1 synth included with MC7. You may find it easier in the long run to use TTS-1 instead of going outside of MC7 for GM sounds. Regardless input echo must be enabled on the track to hear sound while playing the virtual controller.

I think, Thanks to your help

• Made a midi track on channel 1 with output as Cakewalk tts-1
• Made and audio track with output being my onboard realtek speakers

Somehow, even though I see Track 1 Virtual controller in the dropdown list when choosing in input for this audio  track, the selection of this item "does not take" ie the selection from the dropdown goes back to "None"
 
Any ideas?

The input to the audio track should be a  Cakewalk TTS-1 output
The input to the midi track should be the Virtual Controller
The virtual controller should not show in an audio track. Is it possible you are confusing and instrument track with an audio track?
 
Maybe tutorial #4 would help with how to work with virtual instruments. There is also a videos about the virtual controller and using instruments. The latter is an MC6 video but the information applies to MC7.
