There are probably close to a dozen versions of this song, all with different lyrics. Irving Mills was the writer although he borrowed heavily from earlier songs. Mills himself wrote several versions of it. This is his second version, which I always thought was the best, though few people sing this one.

St. James Infirmary Blues
(Words and music by Irving Mills)

I went down to St. James Infirmary
And saw my baby there
Stretched out on a long white table
So cold, so sweet, so fair

I tried to keep from crying
My heart felt just like lead
She was all I had to live for
How I wished it was me instead

Let her go, let her go, God bless her
Wherever she may be
She could have searched this wide world over
And never found a man as sweet as me

A few things i should have pointed out:

I'm tuned down a whole step. It's hard to do that with nylon strings without the intonation being off. Hopefully it's not too bad.

I'm recording with the guitar going to the left channel and the vocal to the right on the same wave file. You can watch this happen in Audition on the monitor behind me as I'm playing. (And as you can see I did a few takes prior to this one.) I of course separating the two channels later and processed them separately, although obviously some of the guitar bled into the vocal mic, which is fine. "Leakage is my friend," as Peter Frampton used to say. The guitar went in direct. It has a built-in Fishman Aura and it sounds quite good going direct.

Yes, I'm getting old! 60 next March.

That was really good Bill, quite spine-tingling actually. Lovely vocal, with a hint of Jim Croce.

Brilliant and impressive, very well done! I also like how you didn't drive the headstock into the speakercone. Like I did once.

cheers,
-Tom
