Hi, I'm trying to connect my Mackie Control Universal to the Sonar X3 and I'm having trouble so would like some advice please.
 
I'm using the MIDI in/out of my Saffire Pro 40 which shows up as ins/outs in Sonar.
 
I then go to controller set up and "add" and fromthe list choose Mackie Control.
 
I then choose the Saffire Pro 40 for the MIDI ports, both in and out.
 
It then just perpetually says "connecting...."
 
The MCU starts up fine and hasn't had a problem before on previous DAWs but I didn't set those up.
 
Silly Q, but I'm going from the MIDI OUT of my Pro40 into the MIDI IN of the MCU.  And from the MIDID OUT of my MCU to the MIDI IN of my Pro40.   Surely that's the right way round.  
 
I'm confused in case I'm dong anything silly?
 
 
 

"Connecting..." means Sonar can not establish bidirectional communication with your device.
 
Tests you can perform:
1) remove "Mackie Control" from the list of Control Surfaces in Sonar preferences (important step!)
2) add some MIDI track, with Omni input. Arm it and start recording. Press some buttons (and only buttons!) on MCU. Stop recording.
3) if nothing is recorded, MCU can not send anything to Sonar. Check cable connections, Saffire settings, etc.
4) if something is recorded, check what is recorded. Open Event List/PRV. If you see some "Notes", everything is fine. If you see just Control Changes, your MCU can be in HUI mode. When you get correct messages from MCU, reinsert "Mackie Control". If still you get "Connecting...", response from MCU is not reaching Sonar. Check MIDI activity from MCU side and in Saffire.

Azslow your advice was amazing. It worked.

The problem was the Mackie being in the wrong mode. Works a treat now.

                                Hello Andrew, Per our conversation, let's try resetting, then configuring your Mackie Universal fresh by trying the following steps: 1) Close SONAR if it's open.  Open the Run Command- this can be done on your desktop screen by holding down the ‘windows’ key and pressing ‘r’ on your keyboard
2) At the prompt type the following:
%appdata%\Cakewalk
3) Navigate to your SONAR folder.
4) Locate and delete the file named TTSSEQ or TTSSEQ.ini, which are your MIDI driver settings.
5) Also delete the file named "ctrlsurface.dat".  Once deleted, close out of here and open SONAR. 6) Enable all your MIDI drivers if prompted; go to Edit > Preferences > Devices (under MIDI) and hit Apply. 7) Go to Control Surfaces and reconfigure your Mackie. 

• For Controller/Surface type, select "Mackie Control." 
• For Input and Output, select the appropriate Mackie Options
• Click OK, then hit Apply and Close in Preferences.
