You could see that shot from Vegas. It wasn't so funny when the wind took it and it fell all over parts of Utah causing problems for years. Several more above ground tests were done until they finally learned the error of their ways. Maybe one day they'll figure out how to clean the mess up. They've got 10,000 years to work on it.

They (the U.S.) "only" shot off about 1,000 nukes...  What harm could that cause?

Never mind the detonation, the caption says there were 2 F-89's, whereas it looked to me rather like an F-89 and an RB-57 involved in the sortie instead.  A little errant detail like that would have bugged me so much at the time it would have entirely ruined my experience and enjoyment of the blast.

And who is it that would describe a missile strike required to hit an imaginary point somewhere in the entire sky as "...the perfect shot"?
