  • Can't Get Tempo Mapping to Work Correctly

I edited this post to insert a link to a video that I made to show one of the problems I am having with this. See it here: https://youtu.be/mKwGlmStD3Q

When I drag a clip from a track to the timeline, it does change the tempo, but it locks in just one tempo. The audio track varies a little bit, but SONAR/Melodyne only has one tempo change and it does not vary with the audio.

I tapped a microphone 8 times and used this as the clip to test it out. It quickly gets out of sync because the tempo that Melodyne maps in SONAR is a locked in constant.

I am using SONAR Platinum 2016.04

My Melodyne version is Essential 4.0.4.001

Perhaps the error is on my use of it? Can someone shed some ideas on this? Thank you.

Try changing Melodyne's mode to Percussion. But, I also suspect it might need more to go on than 8 microphone taps, e.g., a rhythm guitar part.

Long shot, is melodyne's algorithm percussion?
If not try another algo.

When I do it the tempo line is defiantly human throughout the track.
Does the clip start @0 -ish, as apposed to maybe a bridge part? That's all I've every tried.

I had it set to Percussion. I did try a rhythm guitar part and it started to vary the tempo. However, at least for me, I had to play a very deliberate easy-to-pick-out part for it to get it right. When I tried a faster "speed-picking" part like what would be common in extreme metal, it did not get the tempo right.

Maybe if I updated to a higher level of Melodyne I would have more precise control over how it detects the tempo?

Ha ha. I know in this day it may be hard to believe, but in my area most of my clients are extreme metal. That is what I cater to. I have other genre's as well to be sure, but that vast majority is the metal. Mostly death metal, but some black metal, power metal and thrash metal too.

I just started working with a new band called Seraphic Disgust and I am mapping out tempos for their songs in pre-production. This feature would be really cool for this.

I did get it to work when it was very obvious 4/4 with large transients nicely spaced. But it doesn't pick it up correctly with that fast stuff. I heard that with higher levels of Melodyne there was some extra control. I would be open to upgrading if that is indeed the case.

In any event, I love the new update. I love SONAR. Great product as always.

Charles - I'm sure Bitman will be happy to hold your beer while you experiment with other genres...   :)

I played hair band "metal" in the day but I can't keep up with speed metal beyond Megadeth.
So I gotta side with melodyne. :-)

Are you first converting to a melodyne clip, or dragging the full clip before that (auto tempo mapping)
For more complicated material I suggest first converting to a melodyne clip, then changing the mode and settings in the Melodyne UI and finally dragging to extract tempo. If you have material specific issues despite this it may be helpful to send a sample of the audio so we can send it to Celemony for analysis.

I tried it both ways. When I convert to a Melodyne clip first, the only options I seem to have are changing to Percussion detection. Other than that, I do not know what else I can change. Perhaps I am indeed lacking in knowledge on how to use this properly.
