Craig Anderton also wrote the forward to one of my favorite books, now in its 3rd Edition, "The MIDI Manual".

I think Craig works about 30 hours a day.

MixControl Pro looks pretty nice and gets raves.

It is nice, but not available anymore.  The company disappeared with a lot of drama behind it.

As already mentioned, both the Sonitus and ReaPlugs are great for bread and butter FX.  There's really no need to look elsewhere, especially when these are free (the Sonitus being bundled with Artist).

I had used Voxengo's Voxformer (about $70) for years, until all the toys in the ProChannel came along and made it easier to use what was already defaulted on every channel.  The dual band compressor, gate and de-esser are still pretty handy to have all lined up and ready to go.

Hmm...I might just have to go back to that.

There are a host of free options here... some of them even sound half-decent!

you could probably populate a basic DAW with a versatile fleet of plugs for nearly every imaginable purpose without spending a dime... more and more of them are 64-bit, with respectable interface and sonics...
