  • New LP EQ and LP MB seem to kill some midi notes....

When I insert the LP EQ or LP MB to either an instrument track or a soft synth audio track and play back the tracks with MIDI notes, some notes seem to be missing, that is, they don't play. There just seems to be some sort of delay or slowness sort of thing too, kind of drag of the audio at times (but not significant, the main issue is some midi notes missing).

I thought it could be due to using the LP EQ or LP MB on a soft synth track which they probably should not be ? I hope that is not the case.
But then, when I insert the LP EQ or LP MB into a master bus where all my soft synth tracks are routed into, the same thing happens.
In all cases, the moment I delete the LP EQ or LP MB and playback again, everything is fine and normal.

Now is this happening to anyone else too OR am I doing something wrong if its not a bug ?

Thanks microapp.

I tried both options of changing to non-linear in the plugin and increasing playback buffer to 1000 ms. Both worked for playback with no missing notes. With a setting of 'low' precision though, it seems to be slightly better even with a 250 ms setting for playback buffer.

However, when playing live notes from my midi controller for the track with LP EQ on it, huge latency still exists even if playback buffer is increased to 1000 ms with a linear precision setting. Its only if the precision is set to non-linear that live playing with unnoticeable latency gets restored.

In other words, could we conclude that if precision is set to linear, live midi playing with LP EQ or MB inserted will retain significant latency no matter what the playback buffer is set to which seems logical as that buffer is intended for "playback" only. But what this means is that with a linear precision option, trying out different EQ settings for different bands on the fly with live midi playing by solo-ing bands, changing modes, etc., will not be much of an enjoyable experience.

First thing to remember is these are really not intended to be used when tracking.  They are aimed at mastering, so that would in the main be a single stereo file.

Try opening the expert section and set the precision to none linear.  This will remove the need for the longer look ahead buffer required to keep the phase aligned in the process reducing their latency requirement.

You wll not be able to use these VSTs live with the Linear Phase Mode (LP).
The LP mode is intended for mastering. The algorithm for LP is computationally extensive and also it must 'look-ahead' in the data stream. Both these things add to the audio latency. This is not a deficiency in these VSts, it is the result how LP must be implemented. For example, it is not really possible to do LP in hardware. Phase shift is what makes hardware EQ work. It would be very difficult if not impossible to make a hardware EQ with zero phase shift. The math functions which allow LP are only practical to implement digitally and then just barely (with current tech anyway).
So for now anyway, LP mode is for mastering (or when latency is not relevant).

By the time you're using a PDC-inducing Mastering EQ in a project, you should probably have all your soft synths frozen. That said, I have been experimenting with it in projects with unfrozen synths, and have not seen a problem with Prepare Using buffer at 500ms.

Thanks all. I get the technical purpose and the way it functions. Basically, I guess it works well for what its intended, that is, on final mixed audio bounces where overall EQ balances need to be achieved at mastering stage. And of course, with the playback buffer increased, it should manage playback of unfrozen soft synths with unnoticeable latency.
