Back to the OP. I'd like to suggest that the next time you want to do this, just take off the strings and put some shrink wrap on them instead. You can simply slice it off with no residue if it wears out. 

When it comes to damping, I'm from the Jamerson school. Tuck a piece of foam under the strings. You can move it around to adjust the damping.

Shrink wrap, yes.  That's what I've seen used.

to swing, or attemp to swing it back to topic.....

I knew a bass player who, before a show, used to roll up a doobie ......I meant.... bandana and wedge it under the strings at the bridge to allow a slight muting...claimed he liked the tone it gave. 

Then there was the bass player who used a distortion pedal fuzz tone on everything..... I think the doobie would  have definitely helped that ........
