Does anybody out there with Garritan JABB3 "Jazz and Big Band" virtual instrument that care to relate how well it works with Sonar? I'm thinking of buying, and just want to make sure it will actually work okay with my Daw.

Works fine. The main thing you need to do when using Garritan synths under SONAR is to disable Zero Controllers When Play Stops in MIDI preferences. Garritan instruments use Modulation (CC1) to control volume so zeroing controllers will silence the synth every time you stop playback so won't hear anything when when editing or rehearsing.

Garritan responds to either Mod (CC1) or Expression (CC11). It's a good idea to place an initial mod level in a midi track going to the Aria player. I usually do this right off in the event editor.

That's actually not very good advice because then pitch wheel events don't get reset to zero either, causing tuning problems. It is better to know that Aria player responds to CC1 for volume and just make sure to record that along with your midi.

+1 Get in the habit of initializing your tracks with CC messages. I built them into my templates.

Thank for the heads up about adding modulation controller event.
 
Some questions:
This adding event business is new to me...So do these steps look right?:
1.Select a midi track that has JABB3 as the virtual instrument.
2. From menu: View...Event List
3. Add an event to measure 1 at like HSMF 00:00:01:01.  Kind:Control;   Data:1-Modulation with a value=100 (not sure what value to use)
 
Two more questions:
Q: Is the need to add a CC1 event peculiar to Garritan products, or do other similar non-Garritan virtual instruments also require this manipulation?
Q: A little off topic....but what do you think of  the Garritan JABB3 virtual instrument? Are the horn sounds okay? Ease of use with Sonar?

You could also just enable record on the track and record the mod wheel turned up to the desired volume level. I've even heard someone use tape to hold it in position. Not the preferred method, of course, because the mod wheel lets you set dynamic volume levels. I generally hold the mod wheel and play one handed. For most of these instruments, that is sufficient.
 
This is not at all peculiar to Aria Player-based instruments. Many EastWest and Kontakt libraries do the same.
 
Finally, JABB3 isn't my favorite library. I prefer Chris Heins Horns, but the instruments in JABB3 are usable.

I add initial values for Mod and Expression when using Garritan, also, but that doesn't address the problem of synths being silenced when editing/rehearsing with playback stopped. I have made a number of requests over the years for the Bakers to allow selective zeroing of controllers because I most often need to have sustain zeroed but want controllers that affect timbre and volume left alone. For my purposes disabling Zero Controllers is the lesser of two weevils.

I have no problem with that and think it would be great idea. Maybe even take it further and have a dialog/wizard where one can tell Sonar exactly what to do when playback stops, including things other than zeroing specific controllers.
