This is crap... http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/story/2012/07/12/pol-supreme-court-copyright-rulings.html
I'm not sure ... it is scary to be true, however, it is a good model that in essence takes away a whole bunch of Copyright laws that movie studios, and record companies have been holding out on, for 40 years, and they should not.
All in all, it will mean that the places like iTunes, iCrap and what not, will have an issue ... and that they will become the "new" record companies, with the material by the "BlahBlahBand" exclusively sold here or there. And you have to be a "member" in order to get the downloads ... which means you are paying a monthly fee for the service.
i'm ok with that, and what it might ... MIGHT ... do is take away the "control" of the music to the point where a big name band can get all the advertising and attention, and anyone else does not. Which would suggest that really big names for bands and sellers, will likely diminish ... which I think is a good thing in my book!
It also has done one thing to music ... that is probably good ... many of the pieces showing at iTunes, iCrap and other outlets, are not mastered/cleaned versions, and many outlets are simply reselling copies of copies ... which in digital terms is not supposed to be an issue, but it is, though extremely minor by comparison to the earlier versions of the LP, Cassette or Video copies. And it will endup forcing these folks to forgo these, since they can not gain from it.
I think that the Internet is a great thing ... but coming with it, was a generation of people that were simply milking money anyway they could, and it was impossible to detail which one of those was a legitimate seller and someone that was actually paying the Copyrights ... the likelihood is that they weren't! So, this will mean that those folks will be out of luck ... in general terms.
Again, all this crap does, is place music in YOUR hands ... and if you are expecting to get some extra money from ASCAP or BMI, those folks are not into it to protect you ... they have been in it all along to rip you off and go off on their own tangents, and strictly commercial, protecting the big name groups and hits -- not YOU!
All of the copyright laws need to be re-evaluated ... end of story ... and I would like to see the "control" by record companies, or other large venues to dissipate. The only bad thing is that in 5 years, you will only be able to get The Beatles in iTunes ... and nowhere else ... but when that happens, it is another record company ... in control of the music, and the likelihood of it expanding further is probably not going to happen.
But it is a great chance for the Coffee House Band ... to market itself and not have to wait, or expect these other bruhahas to control their destiny. I'm not sure it can sell a million, but it probably can sell enough to help the folks involved enjoy an extra meal or two ... because right now they are not getting anything anway! Fun is fun and is always fun ... until you can't eat anymore!
