I have a project that I am trying to export to Soundcloud.

My percussion is going to a drum bus. On the drum bus is an effects chain. The effect switch is automated to turn off at a certain point.

This works most of the time during playback. For some reason, it occasionally does not work, and I have to manually delete the node and re-insert it.

It will not work at all during export. The mix exports fine, except the effect does not turn off. It remains engaged throughout the entire song.

Anyone know what I am doing wrong?

Thanks

I don't know how it is today, 'cause I haven't tried, but at least still 10 years ago it was normal that the VST's on/off parameter was not automatable. It's not a SONAR thing, but depends on the VST.  The need for on/off function had to be done with workarounds, either by using sends, or automating the VST's other parameters like wet/dry, compress ratio or whatever.

doesn't explain why it works during playback, except sometimes... so it 's not to do with the VST...

cakewalk will require you to produce a "recipe to reproduce" in order for it to be acknowledged as a bug unfortunately, and that's sometimes impossible given the complexity of a "fully loaded" project - so if you have the time to spend setting up a new project just to reproduce, then it will get some attention, otherwise just workarounds or speculation

Bill, list the effects in your Fx Chain.

Are they in the Fx bin or in the Pro Channel?

It's the Cakewalk Telephone Vocals chain which is composed of the Eq, the TL-64 and AliasFactor.
I have it as the last module in the Pro Channel.

Seems to work here ok.

Just to clarify - I'm automating the on/off button of the Fx chain - NOT the global PC button (which doesn't expose the control for automating anyway)

If you enable Write Automation on the control, start the project and switch it on/off you should see the envelope being written in the corresponding track.

Yes, the envelope is clearly written..It is not a solid color though, it's grey and dotted and the nodes are grey also.  I can access the nodes and delete and insert and move them, but they have a greyed out look.

Edit: duh, I forgot I froze the track to get it to stop being intermittent.

When I get a chance, I'm going to see if it retains the automation when I export it; however, even if that works, it's not going to solve the mystery.

Geez, that did not work!!

I don't understand.  It plays perfectly now with the track frozen, the automation kicking in at the right time.

But when I export it to Soundcloud, it exports with the telephone effect playing through the entire song.

I'm at a loss.

Export it to your desktop as a .wav.

Then reimport it into the original project, solo it and listen.

You must verify the validity of the export before attempting to upload it or convert to MP3 or whatever.
I've been following this paradigm for years and it hasn't let me down - it serves as a sanity check before my material goes out into the big bad world and provides the opportunity to check for errors/mistakes etc.
