  • cleaning up midi pitch bends (?)

I'm polishing up some midi tracks.  I have all the notes sounding just the way I want, pitch and timing.  But I have some pitch wheel bends that are a bit inconsistent.  The target pitch and the curve getting to/from the target pitch is just a touch sloppy.

Editing this CC data seems daunting since there are a ton of messages to deal with.  I'm thinking there must be a better way.

Can any of you experts share your best practices for adding or editing pitch bends to midi clips?

Thanks!

Delete and re-record the pitch bend movements (leaving the notes untouched), or draw the curves the way you want them to be.

Depending on instrument and how much processing was done by the synth, rendering the track to audio and trying Melodyne may be an option. Heavy processing and/or harmonics can throw Melodyne for a loop though.

Sometimes it would be easier to convert the MIDI events to an envelope and then edit the envelope. In the Track view menu, select "Clips > Convert MIDI Controllers to Envelopes" and follow the dialog to create the pitch envelope. Then edit using the envelope editing tools.

If you're performing bends via a connected keyboard it's best to practice the bends and get them as close to perfect as you can - you can better edit them afterwards if the bend is pretty close to start with.

Don't forget you can record bends independent of notes so I always do it in 2 passes - one for note data and one for pitch bend/controller data.

Alternatively, if you want to draw the bend in, set your Snap settings to something sensible like 1/16 or 1/32
Most synth patches won't sound as though the resolution is this coarse and should very convincing - and you don't have many nodes to worry about for subsequent editing.

ALWAYS make sure the end of the "bent". phrase returns to zero (little black dot) otherwise your next note will be out of tune.
