There is a project template, track template and drum map created for AD2 in this blog http://blog.cakewalk.com/drum-maps-ad2-in-sonar/

Create a new project using the project template, open the step sequencer and everything should be setup.

Thanks to everyone fro their help, but this is all I want to accomplish:

1)  I create a new file - basic
2)  I have track 1 - audio, track 2 - midi
3)  A was able to load Addictive Drums to the audio track under FX - AD2 is set for Studio Rock - Perfect.
4)  I wasn't able to load Addictive Drums to the midi track - do I even need to?
5)  The step sequencer view is not selectable.

I think the key to his problem is/was in step #3.
Inserting AD2 in the FX bin.
Or not.

Everything works perfectly when I do a simple instrument track. When I created a separate file and inserted the soft synth to set the kit pieces to different tracks - I get no sound. The same problem as the drum map. If I can figure out the settings I need to change, the drum map should also work fine. Sometimes the step sequencer is unselectable - can't figure that one out. But this is pretty cool. Thanks. A lot.

You can also open the step sequencer from the upper right area in the AD2 GUI. Looks like a grid box.

If you create a project (or insert a track template) from that blog post mentioned above, you should also have everything routed already. Definitely shy away from piece-parting track routing together (for now), as it can be a bit cumbersome for routing, and in most cases unnecessary.

I followed the instructions for inserting sift synth. When I don't do 'simple instrument track' I get no sound. I can see where the kit pieces are registering on the master -but no sound. I'll need to be at my computer to describe exactly. I can't remember is I armed a track to make v the step sequencer selectable - it was greyed ore and wouldn't let me select it.

Sounds like you are still not entirely clear on inserting and routing. This can be a little difficult to wrap your head around until you have that "Aha" moment. I'll try to explain a little better.

Just like in the physical world, there are three things necessary.
1. An instrument - Keyboard, synth, guitar (this has to be unloaded from the truck, and setup on stage)
2. Input to play/control the instrument (a musician has to provide the input (play it) or the instrument will just sit there)
3. Output so you can hear it. (you must connect it to an amp, otherwise you won't hear it)

In the "virtual" world you have the same.
1. VSTi - AD2, Kontakt, TTS, etc. (these have to be "inserted" into your project)
2. Input - VSTis use MIDI as input. (a MIDI track acts as the musician)
3. Output - VSTis create audio output (an audio track acts as the amp)
(Routing is the cables)

So, in order to "hear" AD2 you need to do the following.
1. Insert the VSTi into your project. You can do this any number of ways. (1) Click the insert menu, insert a soft synth. You can insert a simple instrument track or MIDI + Audio. (2) Or you can press "B" to bring up the browser, click the synths tab, click the "+" buttom and add your synth there.
2. You NEED a MIDI track to send the control messages to the VSTi. Set the Output of that MIDI track to the synth (AD2)
3. You NEED an Audio track to play back the audio the VSTi is generating. Set the INPUT of that audio track to your synth. (AD2)

Any clearer?

Perfectly clear. Thanks! ! I bet it created just midi tracks for the separate kit pieces. When I chose simple audio it created both

This is only $9.99 on Cakewalk's site and is a comprehensive video on this (And many other Instruments):

It was created for Sonar X3, but the steps remain the same (just might be in slightly different places).  I have this and I am still wrapping my head around the whole MIDI thing.
I do Live sound and play drums and up to this point have not synthesized any of my work...I may start.  I really like the cello & sax sounds!

Anthony, usually ONE MIDI track will control the entire kit. You can have each piece routed to it's own AUDIO track to mix yourself.

Anthony, I did this video earlier. It's not perfect havent got much time at the minute, my 2 kids are sick. Did the best I could, It shows the three ways to set up addictive drums and a little bit on the step sequencer. Anything you would like to ask just let me know.
