  • Sheer Speculation: An Opportunity for Roland/the Bakers?

Wow!!!  The times they be a changing...

The company that owns the "Industry Standard" program-that-shall-remain-nameless is at it again.  They have gotten rid of all of their consumer product divisions.  They have sold off M-Audio to inMusic (parent corp of Akai, among others), though they are retaining the better Fasttrack interfaces.  Their Avid consumer video ap has been sold to... Corel!?!!?!

The curious thing is what is going on with Sibelius.  At the very least, what can be said is that the original office of Sibelius has been closed.  It isn't clear if Sibelius will continue to exist, or if those working in that department were all simply let go.

If Roland/the Bakers were ever to do anything in terms of getting the notation of Sonar into some sort of serious form perhaps an opportunity might be presenting itself here.

As for those of us that own one of the better M-Audio interfaces - Profire 610 here - things could also get very interesting.

Thoughts/comments?

I've always wondered about that term "consumer products."  I mean, if you got rid of everything in that category, then the only things you'd have left are products nobody wants, no?

A follow-up comment:

In good "corporate speak" officially Sibelius is staying with Avid, but the Sibelius office is being closed.

Still could be an opportunity for Roland...

Craig, good point...

It looks like Avid will be trying to focus on the "high-end" again, and also the very $$$ market of post-production.  So far this year, Avid is continuing to bleed ever increasing, and real, financial losses.

Bapu, you may be right...

In the "Sonar" world, viable notation does not exist...

I wrongly keep getting my hopes up.

You're right.  It could be an opportunity--or an omen.  It could be a sign of a larger shake-up in the industry too.

And as for eggsulunt manglagement, IIRC, Avid bought Pinacle for over $460 million in cash and stock, and sold their resulting "Consumer Video Division" to Corel for $14 million.

Great job, that... maybe the $446 million had to go for Bouy fees?
