- there are many negative Win 10 reports about new OS details being questionable, more intrusive etc . . .

There are plenty of places on the web that tell you how to disable that kind of stuff. I haven't bothered, but the info is out there if you want it. By NOT opting out, I get a cool new desktop picture every now and then...

. . . agreed, but only if you have the time and fortitude for such research . . . for those of us who haven't done the upgrade to Win 10, we depend on all of you "Win 10 pioneers" to let us know whether it's really worth going there right away, or maybe wait a bit until we upgrade some stuff we are currently running on Win 7 . . . been burned before . . . "won't get fooled again"

I'm having this problem while running sonar after upgrading to win 10 which is really annoying.

There are things I love abt win 10 and hate abt win 10. You might find something like WinareoTweaker useful to customize the things you dont like. But its definitely worth a free upgrade. Don't clean install at first. Try to update directly so that you can revert back to Win7 within 1month. If you really wanted to. Mostly you won't. But to be safe dont clean install.

i would say if there is no currently known issue with your hardware/software being compatible with windows 10 to just go for it. as others have said the upgrade whether it is in place upgrade or from scratch was painless. for me everything worked fine, actually better than before on windows 7 pro. i never wanted to leave windows 7 pro but now i wouldn't want to go back. sonar should be more than fine in my experience and by the majority of reports, of course there can be exceptions. i done 3 in place upgrades and 1 from scratch where i purchased a copy of windows 10 from microsoft because i brought my test pc which was running 32bit windows 7 but 64bit capable up to 64bit OS. in place upgrade is of course much easier as everything else, your programs etc don't need installing and setting up as it is with a fresh install

and aren't there some beautiful pics. i copy the contents of
C:\Users\user name\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager_cw5n1h2txyewy\LocalState\Assets
every week or so to save the ones i like and change my wallpaper when i come across a nicer one

i would not hesitate doing the upgrade to windows 10

Upgrading your OS to Win 10 shouldn't be a problem whichever route you take.

The big caveat is to make sure there are Win 10 drivers for your hardware - your Audio Interface might not function properly (if at all) without a suitable driver.

I did it basically to see if my interface would work in new OS. M-audio 1010lt, old legacy device. Win 10 ran off with win 7 drivers. No issues. But, this was a 'have to find out' situation. The inevitable change will have to happen eventually.   MJ

If you are wondering on the 2019 and 2020 things that people are talking about, that's when Microsoft ends Windows 7 support. Microsoft supports all OSes for a minimum of 10 years from the date they are released. So barring any extensions (which happen but are rare) support ends January 14 2020. After that date it will receive no security or other updates. That means, of course, that using it online becomes dangerous because sooner or later a security flaw will be found and it won't be patched. Also when MS discontinues support for an OS, hardware and software manufacturers basically all do as well, and won't take support calls for you if you are running it.

However as a practical matter support from 3rd parties often dies out before the actual end date of the OS. Vista is still supported by MS and will be until 2017, but it is very common to see things not support it anymore. That is beginning to happen with 7 as well. We have gotten some new computers at work from Dell and Lenovo that do not have 7 drivers available, they are 8 and up only. Newer CPUs also need newer OSes as architecture differences aren't supported on older ones.

So while you can keep an OS for awhile, keeping it forever is more or less unfeasible unless you wish to operate a computer disconnected from the Internet and never upgrade any hardware or software.

I'm currently running Windows 7 and plan to upgrade to 10.  My machine has been tweeked to perfection and has not caused me any issues since I bought it.  After upgrading, is there anything you have to re-tweek or turn off or turn off again? Anything to be cautious about?

Thanks,

Soop

I don't bother with much tweaking personally, I prefer the "just throw more power at it" procedure :). If you want to tweak for DAWs it is the same basic thing as any Windows: Disable any low power settings for the CPU and video card, shut down any unnecessary background tasks, etc. I personally don't bother. I can drop my DPC and ISR latency, and thus get down the latency in Sonar, by disabling power options but it makes my system draw a lot more power at idle, so I'll keep the power states and just turn up the buffers.

Only real thing to be cautious about is compatibility. Sometimes hardware isn't happy with Windows 10 so if you have hardware that isn't, it can be a problem. A lot of it works fine with older drivers, but sometimes it doesn't. Also be aware that while we've had very good luck with upgrade installs at work, they can have issues sometimes and necessitate a wipe and reinstall, so make sure you are prepared to do that if necessary. Don't be in the middle of a project and say "Oh I'll update in a couple hours and then continue."
