  • When is a recording not a recording ?

Hey Guys,
I have a weird thing I am trying to understand in Sonar.
recently, I was trying to record audio from one plug in to an audio track using patch points
  • Synth tracks is all good - audio coming out
  • patch point is all good, audio passing through (though its a double of the synth track)
  • Waveform option on the audio track shows the waveform of the audio passing through the track
but
  • when I record, I see the red waveform for track but as soon as I hit stop it disappears !
  • there is nothing on the take lane or main track - it just disappears as if it was never there.

what I found by playing around was to disable the "exclude Synth inputs" option in the Project->record preferences in the section "allow arm changes during record/playback"
as soon as I did that everything worked as expected.\\now the weird thing is that I wasn't toggling the record settings during record or playback; instead I was setting record on while the transport was stopped then hitting the R key to start recording.

another thing I noted was that if I was viewing the "media" tab, I would see a list of files created by the tracks I was trying to record and the number incrementing  but the files disappearing as soon as I hit stop... ie SEM mix, Rec (145)

So, is this a bug or expected behaviour ??

Sounds like a bug. But does it only happen when recording via Patch Point? What happens if you split the Instrument track, arm the synth audio track, and record to that track directly?

Is Auto Punch enabled in Preferences > Project > Record?

thanks for the replies guys !

I will try the split track.
When I created a new Audio track right next to my patch point track and choose an external audio input, record enable both & hit R, both track indicate that they are recording (waveform visible etc.) but when I stop, only the Audio input from external is left - the patch point track is blank.

Auto Punch is not enabled - separately, I tried setting up punch points & the result was that there was a waveform visible at the punch point ( as expected) but as soon as the transport stopped, the waveform disappeared.

thanks

If it's a bug - where do I report it (apart from here) ??

What version are you on?

This problem sounds exactly like one that I reported just after the patch points came out (about 6 months ago). I had it happen that when recording multi-outputs from AD2, 2 tracks would go missing after I hit stop (WAV files disappear). However, that problem I could reproduce in a simple project, so Cakewalk fixed it in the next release.

You might have found another special case of the same problem. Please try to reproduce in a small project, which according to the detailed research that you have done already should be possible

thanks for the link scook - I will try to reproduce it some more on another machine before logging it.

Rob thanks for your suggestions and observations - it's good to not totally be alone ! I am on the latest version 2016.03

My project was a test so just 3 or 4 tracks in total - very small.
