  • How To Have 2 Synths Play From One MIDI Track

So I am looking to basically double up parts... have 2 softsynths play the same MIDI notes - but I only want one MIDI track so if I edit a note, I don't have to edit it twice (1 for each synth).

I am wracking my brain out on how to achieve this.

Thank you!

Hi. I do not know how to point a MIDI track to two synths, but. If you clone the track in question and check "link clips", you can edit one of the tracks and have it occur in the other track and vice versa. Hope it helps.
All the best.

actually this still doesn't work for me, because I already have the track created, now I just want to link clips... too bad you can't link except for when cloning.

I believe you have to go out of Sonar and back in with a midi loopback.  I just did this using loopBe, a virtual midi patchbay.  One midi track with the midi clip sends its output to midi port 1 on loopBe.  Then two other midi tracks take their input from this port, each with their own synth.  Latency may be a problem.  Sometimes it seems ok, sometimes not, but this may have to do with the samples I tried.

You can link clips at any time. Copy the clip, choose Paste Special, and click "Link to Original Clip(s)." You can also specify this under drag and drop options.

Both clips will be surrounded by dotted lines to show they're linked.

This is why I made the Feature Request of MIDI-HUB / MIDI PATCH POINT

But no one is listening

Another option is to use a multi-timbral synth that allows you to stack patches, like Omnisphere or Kontakt. Either of these will allow you to map incoming midi into multiple patches.

The way to access clip linking via drag and drop options is track view Options > Drag and Drop Options. You can choose to link clips there.

I must be missing something.  Why can't you set both synths to the same port and channel?  Of course, this would mean not setting the patch, volume, or pan in the MIDI track.
