I may have asked this before, but I'm not sure. I turn on clip automation and get the red line over the clips. Select the pencil tool button and try to draw a node. Nope..doesn't work. Try again..nope can't draw nodes with the pencil..Y U no draw??  Switch to the smart tool. Hover over the spot where I want to draw a node, the icon turns into a (dramatic pause here...)......pencil..... and then I can draw a node. Huh??? Am I missing some basic setting that I need to get the pencil tool to draw nodes, or is this just how things are intentionally designed?

You're probably using the Draw tool, check out this post.

Thanks for the link. Yea that's it. You have to click/hold/and move the mouse a bit to the right or left to enter nodes with the draw tool. Much appreciated!
