True, if you ONLY want to install the UR44 then the driver is all that is needed.  If you want to install the included plug-ins I agree that Cubase should not be needed.  But, in my case that was the only way they got "fully" activated. They were activated by their e-licenser program but were showing not activated when I tried to use one in Sonar.  Only after installing Cubase AI8 were the VST's activated/useable in Sonar.

Ya that's the problem with Stienberg, and the e licencer software is a PITA,, I lived with it for a few years and then bought the dongle.
I upgrade my systems and hard drives at least once a year and it meant e mailing Stienberg , explaining why you needed a new serail number etc... then the stupid e licencer would still not work!! I hated it.. But the dongle has made it so I never have to talk or beg them again..

If you want to pull your hair out even more, try posting on the Stienberg user forum. Example, we can only post on the LE forum.  Problem is all the people who actually are active are on the the full version Cubase forum where you can't ask questions. So your cut off from any real help. A question asked on the lesser forums will get one reply ,,, a week later at best... I gave up and it's one reason I stick with Sonar... this forum is here to answer issues, and usually within an hour if not a minute..

Besides all of the software problems I can get a Steinberg UR22 20% off at Guitar Center.  Sounds like a deal?
I'm interested in the hardware so what do you say?

The hardware is fine and the driver installed without problems.  They had a firmware update for the UR44 on their web site and it too installed OK.

I still haven't figured out how to get the remnants of the bundled Cubase off my computer. Their stuff really sinks its hooks into your system.

That's why I have avoided Cubase. It's always been that way.

I wouldn't worry about it, It will create a shared plug in folder that a lot of software seems to find easily. I don't find it invasive unless you use the e key software which I no long need..
