I've been using this successfully for a long time... and I thought I understood it but today my memory lapsed and I could use some refresher...
 
Using it only to hold down a few loud peaks and not change overall gain...
 
If I set the threshold to say -1.8 it should do nothing but compress anything that goes over -1.8, correct?
 
Now if I want to have makeup gain, I set the ceiling? That doesn't sound right but I see no other alternative...
 
I thought the ceiling somehow (magically) adjusted the output using a specific peak setting instead of a specified quantity of gain...?
 
Am I understanding this?

I might be way off on this one. But to my understanding the threshold adjusts the make up gain as well as threshold level (maybe the same way as Boost11?), and the output level is just for avoiding going into the red. But I could be totally wrong Other will certainly know better.

My understanding is that the threshold is where it will limit the peaks. The other one controls where the new peaks will be gained up to. So if you set your threshold to -1.8dB and have the ceiling at 0dB then you have effectively added 1.8 dB of gain to your original signal.

Hi Keni, if using the CL to tame peaks, I use the CL with both Threshold and Bass off, and do as you describe. Manually adjusting the Threshold does cut into the content if "too close," so setting that high as you mentioned is recommended. The Ceiling should also have a buffer as certain scenarios will cause it to peak rather than a true Brickwall. I set both Threshold and Ceiling manually to -1 dB for this typically.
 
As far as make-up gain, adjusting the "Gain" in the track will adjust the level feeding the CL (I would not recommend using the "Volume" or track fader (although technically true "make-up gain"), as both come post CL and take the limiter out of the loop on you doing this).

It would be very difficult to accept that the threshold control alters volume as well as sets the trigger point (threshold) desired... I still believe the ceiling control is where this is determined.
 
If I set the ceiling to -0.03 I should get that is a brickwall that the output of the limiter does not allow signal to pass. Then the limiter is determining the needed ratio to make this happen as well as rate-of-change either auto or custom setting...
 
If I set the ceiling at -0.30, I should get a much lower output which would also have lighter compression still happening at the input threshold?

I thought that the CL was "always a limiter". Meaning that for the most part it was limiting signal  peaks at a certain point. With that said the ceiling is where it is active  to say this is the point where I "work" to limit and the threshold is the signal level that I start working to that end. So ... if there is a lot of material at my threshold level, my limiting or capping effect is increased. But if there is not a lot of signal at my threshold, I don't have much capping to do... IHTH...

my CL doesn't seem to be a true brickwall.  Depending on source, I can set the output to -.1 and it'll still peak out.

No Brickwall is ever totally dead ended.... Enough force will find it's way! ;-)
 
But this thread leaves me as uncertain as ever.... and I have not yet found a definitive description of the device/controls...

Be sure it is set to Post FX bin. If not and you have other FX it wont do much. Also if you set the bass boost it will let through some bass and not limit as hard. The way Lunatech uses it is the way I do too.

I've been using it a long time with a perspective that I understood it, but somehow it doesn't always do as I expect so I'm questioning my understabding and so far I've been unable to acquire an actual description of each control's function(s)
