For those having difficulty getting Windows 7 to update, Dale in the Problem Reports area posted a tool that Microsoft has that seemed to help.
I too had difficulty getting Windows 7 to update, get this, in order to install Windows 10!!!
I had to keep at it for 4 days straight!!!

Here is a link that may help

While we continue to support Windows 7, updates are getting increasingly difficult when we upgrade our tools. SONAR now uses the latest Microsoft redistributables and the Microsoft installers are finicky about having all the updates for Win7 in place.
Windows 7 is now almost 7 years old.  Microsoft has already stopped Mainstream support as of last year. At this point Windows 7 is on life support until 2020. This means that only important and emergency fixes to Win7 will likely be issued. As time goes on, incompatibilities will likely creep in and may or may not be addressed by Microsoft in a timely fashion.
I thing its a wise idea to consider upgrading while you are ahead rather than be faced with a surprise one day in the not too distant future.

Have you ever seen OS usage statistics?

Don't do any more win 7 updates.  That's best the solution if you want to stay on Win 7. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.   Hopefully Cakewalk will be able to provide a heads up if certain Sonar upgrades stop working in Win 7.  Otherwise, if things  have been working working fine, leave it alone.  And for God's sake DO A FULL SYSTEM DRIVE BACKUP BEFORE YOU RUN THE SONAR UPDATE!  I haven't done a win 7 update since Win 10 came out and no issues at all or residual problems.   Keep your music computer off the internet and you won't need any "security" fixes.   Frankly at this point, I can't imagine what else any DAW can add to their system to allow us to make music any better.   Just fix whatever issues exist and we will all have the most powerful music recording system known to man.   Even with all this, most of us can't touch mixes from the 70s so more tools, toys and updates ain't gonna help.

If you don't keep windows up to date, even if your system is offline, you will likely be exposed by removable media like USB sticks, CDs/DVDs or someone's cheap Chinese cell phone
The only safe system is one that is powered down.

Windows do seem to be making it difficult to use auto updates on win 7 since the release of win 10. I guess they are encouraging everyone to make the leap.

Unless MS choked download speeds, which is certainly possible, a clean Win7 installation does not take 24 hours but does require several reboots because some updates are sequential. The gating item is download speed, which does impact some still.

That article does not clarify the "wait" nor comment on disk imaging, which is highly recommended for anyone potentially rebuilding a machine and wanting to keep Win7.

I am running Win 10 and I just installed new Platinum update and I crash on start-up after scanning the Plug-ins. Now an error reporting tool comes up. I have tried every interface I own etc. Same thing.

I updated 2 PCs to latest win 7 and one to latest win 8.1 updates just last Friday and had no problems at all even being 6 months out thus installing some 80 updates on each machine ...
