I'm not sure you can but if I want to automate a group of tracks without affecting sends I just group the tracks temporarily and automate like that.

I was looking at a video on vca tracks and could not wrap my head around the difference between the vca and aux with use of a patch point track

vca is similar to using quick groups (though not exactly the same)
aux tracks are similar to buses yet more flexible
