Sir William
Thank you so much tenfoot. I shall certainly have a play with playlists. Can I just ask - as the next song plays, is the previous song unloaded and memory freed up?

It is as long as the playlist's enable button is active, unless you make a change to the song (move a fader etc). If Sonar sees the file as 'dirty' (the file change asterix indicator appears next to the project name at the top of the Sonar window) it will leave the project open in the background.

Ah, that's a pity, because I was hoping to control things in real time (if needed) with a control surface. However, I can work around that. Thanks again. :)

Yeah - It is a little frustrating. I do the same with my X32. The playlist/Sonar seems to handle quite a few projects open in the background without any issue though (I run around 24 tracks per project with realtime FX, but no live vsti's).

Good luck with it!

Hi thanks again tenfoot  I did what you said and it works but it makes all windows bigger as well.
Not good for me.
Peace

I hear you Maltastudio - it's a very very long way from ideal!

Well in my case there is something different. If I run a playlist, say five songs, when I get to the fifth song and then close down via the x in the far top right...there is song 4, close song 4 and behind it there is song 3, close song 3, and behind it is song 2 etc etc. I have made NO changes or edits. Only keystroke has bee the once used to play the song. So obviously they do NOT close down once done with.
I would hazard a guess that these "background" used songs are using some resources, and on a small system that could be significant.

PS: running latest version of SPLAT

I remember the issue you were having Joden. Definitely worth a call to tech support it you still haven't found the cause.
Cakewalk were very helpful when I had a similar problem that turned out to be a plugin causing Sonar to see the songs as changed even though they weren't.

I have 3 systems running Sonar using the playlist and they all close the songs once played (when the playlist is enabled). It is certainly the intended bahaviour. I too am running the latest version of Splat - not that it matters. The playlist has pretty much worked the same way for about 15 years:) Well, to be fair it did get a bit of a polish in X2/3, mainly to things that got broken in x1 though!

FWIW, if you aren't running VST instruments, the passive 'background' songs don't seem to be using much in the way of system resources. I often un-enable the playlist during rehearsals and will end up with a dozen or so songs open with no noticeable lag in the system or spikes in the performance metres.

Wish I could be of more help,  but if I remember rightly you have tried most everything.

Maybe the Windows magnifier could be the solution to make things bigger temporarily.

haha! That's cool tenfoot...I cannot find anything that could be causing it. And yes I do have VSTi's in the projects for every song for my live keys and bass work! On my laptop the screen re-draws and cwp loadings are "stuttery" which is a bit distracting especially when trying to do quick transitions (people dancing etc etc).

Hey fellow playlist users! Does your scroll line work in the track view after the first song on the playlist? Mine only shows on the first and last song. I can work with it, but it's sure nice to see what's coming in the song. Especially when I'm using it to fire midi and light cues.

Hey JCody. Yes - I see that! I wonder when that started. The playback marker returns when you click on the track view window of the current song. It seems that the window focus shifts to the minimised window of the upcoming song on the playlist, with the exception of the last song, where there is no next song!

You know, it seems to me that all of our issues could be solved with just 1 change. Why not make it that the playlist only loads one active song when 'wait for keypress' is enabled? At the end of that song, it closes the current song, loads the next and then displays the start next song dialogue. No gllitching and dodgy screen redraws. No scroll bar window focus issues. No project windows left open. The only cost would be a very slightly longer delay whilst the song loads - a total non issue with 'wait for keypress' anyway.

I say we start a revolution and demand a little love for the playlist. Come on - there's four of us now. Thats almost 5. We are legion.

Scook you are a freakin' wonder! That works brilliantly. Activate the 'keep focus on playlist' button, then set the magnifier to follow keyboard focus and position its window down one side of the screen and you have an instant giant playlist.

Tenfoot,
There are times when I need immediate playback, like in using the "N" key to immediately start the next song. It used to work perfectly. Then they changed something in the order of when the next song gets loaded that somehow causes loss of focus on the currently playing song. Actually it works if you load one of sonar's own templates. But as soon as you change something in it, then the wonky behavior re-immerges. My dream would be a playlist that could play songs on top of each other. I use it for live theater. Let's say you have a scene that takes place in the rain and you have to have a thunderclap happen on cue. You would want the rain effect to continue when you hit the spacebar for the thunder. Anyway . . . one can dream.
