I feel really dumb asking this but...

Just received my new Babyface Pro from MF. The back of the unit has four XLR connections, 2 input, and 2 output.

But which are which? Should I assume they follow convention in that the male connectors would be the outputs? I need to order some XLR to TRS cables for my monitors, so that's why I'm asking instead of just hooking things up to see if I hear something.

Thanks!

Is there no manual showing how the connections are configured?

If not here's the link to the website info http://www.rme-audio.de/en/products/babyface.php

You'll find that the cable end to which you can connect your mic will be your inputs. The other will be for your amp/speaker connections or outputs.

The non mic end of a mic cable usually has xlr male connectors which logically fit with the female connector.

Female connectors take inputs is the easiest way to remember.

Having looked through the manual I see that it actually doesn't tell you.

And yes you're right it does follow convention. If you imagine the four XLR plugs are the fittings on the outside of a box then indeed the male are outputs and the females are inputs.

Thanks, that makes sense. I finally figured out the microphone method you mentioned above and ordered female XLR to TRS cables. You would think there would be a nice diagram in the manual, but there wasn't. I guess RME figures if I'm smart enough to move up their level, then I should be able to figure it out.
