Hi. Been fighting some issues trying to get my TD-11KV kit to trigger Addictive Drums 2 (AD2) in Sonar Professional.

Here's my set up: TD11 -- 5-pin MIDI Out -- Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 MIDI In -- 2i4 USB into Sonar

First, from what I've been able to learn on the forum and other Google research, when I connect via Midi, Sonar should recognize that a control surface has been connected, and the kit should show up as a control surface in Preferences/MIDI/Control Surfaces. But there is nothing there. Should there be?

If I click the "add" button there are three drop-downs to select from, including ACT Midi Controller, a Cakewalk Generic Surface and some Mackie control surfaces. Plus Input Port and Output Port. This is where I get lost. And what is ACT data? Do I have to import whatever that is to use the ACT MIDI Controller option in the Controller/Surface drop down? I'm trying to connect the dots.

Do I have to to do something in Preferences/MIDI/Drum Map Manager first? Or Preferences/MIDI/Instruments? I see two Roland GS options in the "Instruments Used" section there, but how to know which to use? Do I need to do anything in Preferences/Project/MIDI?

Thanks for any help to get me going!
Billy

Hi. Your TD-11 is not a Control Surface, it just sends MIDI messages to your Scarlett 2i4 to play the kit pieces in AD2.
Since you connected the TD-11 to the Scarlett the right way, you only have to be sure that the Scarlett MIDI Ports are enabled / checked in SONAR under Preferences > MIDI > Devices: Inputs.
Now if you insert AD2 as a Soft Synth, set the Input of the MIDI Channel to the corresponding MIDI Input of your interface.
Enable "Input Echo" (!) and play your V-Drum kit.

Best,
Klaus

One thing to add: You probably don't want to use the internal sounds from the TD-11 when triggering AD2, so you have to switch "Local Control" inside of the TD-11 to "Off".

Also to consider is that you might not get the best hi hat mapping...

I use both the TD12 and TD20 and the hats are never "right"

It usually requires manual editing to make best use of AD2's multi samples....

Internally I think the Roland system is more complex in handling the hi hat than current midi...?

Klaus, thanks so much! Now I know that I don't have some sort of missing link! There seem to be so many little intricacies to MIDI, it's hard to get my head around it.  I'll give it a shot!

Thank you... So, all the mapping is handled in AD2, or Session Drummer 3, or whatever VST I'm triggering? No need to map anything in Sonar Preferences/MIDI/Drum Map Manger. Do I have that right?

It depends. Some Drum VSTis like AD2 come with templates mapped to common e-drum kits, but I'm not sure about Session Drummer 3.
In AD2, click on the "?" in upper right corner > "Map Window" > "Map Preset" > "Roland" > "TD-11".
That should work.

No... You will have to either use a midi map or manually move each sound/key...

If you're trying to play AD2 live-direct, mapping is needed...

Sonar's map system us pretty good and/or you can edit within the TD... There are subtle advantages to each...
