I am using Session Drummer 3/Sonar 8.5.3 PE  and I am trying to use brushes on a snare.

I am not sure how to change the kit/drum to have brushes.  I tried different kits including one called "groovykit_brushes".  But it sure sounds like sticks hitting the snare.

How do change "sticks" to "brushes"?

Hello charleyrich,  right-click on the snare drum and select load instrument.  Then navigate to Session Drummer 3\Content\Kits\2 - Snares\SL Groovy Kit Brushes Snares.  There, you will have more brush snare sound options.  They are just labeled as snare, so you will have to load each one to determine if it is a suitable brush sound.

I tried that and it worked.  However, these must be 100 LB brushes as they sound like sticks.  I was expecting a soft brush like sound.  Am I doing something wrong?  The files all are some variation of "groovy brush snare_##.flac"

Its not you, its the samples. It seems they don't fit your needs. There's no way to change SD3 settings for this. A different sample must be used, where you find the samples is up to you to figure out.

With SD3 as you change the velocity of the note, it uses different sounds.
In this case, is it possible that when you use vel=100, it's using a sound that's
not right for you, but, since brushes are inherently a quiet sound, maybe using
a lower velocity, like 50 or 70 might access the correct sound that you're trying
to achieve.
 
Note: I haven't tried this, but computers are logical beasts and this seems logical
to me.
 
 

I understand what you mean Gomez, and it may work in some cases, but I disagree it will fix Charley's issue. 

Example: Changing the velocity of a gunshot does not alter the adsr of the sound, it lowers the total db output.

I feel the same applies here. I could be wrong, but that's what I think is the case.

it's pretty tough in this day and age to find some nice brush samples. it's been an obsession of mine for years. Everything is 'hit it hard' these days. I've got quite a collection of brushy stuff i've collected over the years but organizing it so it fits right with each tune is a nightmare. you won't get there with session drummer either.

I quite agree. These brush samples are not typical of that jazzy soft brush sound such as can be found in Norah Johns Don't know why for example.
 
I found those same jazzy brush samples, and none fit this type of sound.
