I have a softsynth that produces an unpleasant high pitch artifact with certain notes. The samples are heavily processed with reverb and aren't accessible to edit. I don't know if the samples or the reverb are to blame. I've isolated it with a 31-band EQ @3.2k. Problem is the instrument needs that freq to sound right. Is there a way to deal with this without a lot of hassle?

At worst I could kill the 3.2k freq on just the guilty notes after freezing the track leaving the rest untouched.

Thanks scook, I'll see if that helps.

To try different values, I wrote a utility that simplifies editing the upsample settings in AUD.ini. The Plug-in Upsample Editor is available here.

Curious about this. I’m triggering an Addictive Keys grand piano with MIDI. It has some irritating resonances at certain frequencies I can’t seem to do anything about, no matter what I try with EQ, dynamic compression, de-essing or anything else. Could this strategy help that? It’s was a few projects ago and I learned to live with it, but it’s always bugged me.

Also, if you upsample on playback, does it create extra CPU load when you listen back to it?

Thank you scook. You are such an amazing gold mine of knowledge in the forums. When you weigh in on a question, I always sit up straight! :)

Don't have the plug-in, if I had to guess it probably won't help in this case. That said, it takes no time to test.

Hi. You could try using a de-esser on those frequencies. Or a multi-band compressor.
All the best.

Is it something Melodyne can display and let you get rid of?

Thanks for the replies. The offending frequencies (resonances?) are in a solo piano, Addictive Keys Grand, triggered by MIDI. I’ve tried different mic types an placement within AKeys and the de-essing and the dynamic multi-band compressor and eq route, but it’s in a number of high mid to upper mid ranges and the approach just seems to suck the life out of the tone.

Haven’t gotten back to it to try the upsampling, but I will.

Another thing to bear in mind that rarely gets mentioned is that VSTis with their own internal process chain can be a double-edged sword. If processing both internally and externally, the chains can cause grief to each other. Better control of that situation is to disable as much internal processing as possible and use an external chain. Reverb in particular is one effect that should be last to process since it is basically a "frequency smear."
