I know that in Sonar X3 it is possible to convert MIDI to Audio. But my question is: Is it possible to convert Audio to MIDI?
And if yes, how can it be done?

Thank you all in advamce for your responses.

You can do it with Melodyne.

Now here's the scoop. Do not expect much from a dense track. IOW, take a song form a CD and convert it to MIDI will yield garbage.

So the answer is to use a track with just one instrument and the cleaner the better. A bass track can sometimes work really well.

A distorted guitar track.... no so much.

A clean guitar track, yes under the right set of conditions.

The first condition is that you have Melodyne Editor with DNA. That will get the notes of chords separated.

The other major condition is the quality of the track.

Bapu mentions some of the issues involved... Right on all counts...

If your using a monophonic audio track you can do this with the limited version of Melodyne that comes with Sonar... I believe you simply drag the audio track (copy) to a midi track... But I may be wrong as I haven't done this in a while...

I can drag an audio file in X3 and convert it to midi using Melodyne Editor, but for some reason it doesn't work in Sonar Platinum. Any thoughts?

Man this explains why when I tried to convert an audio track of keyboard pads the translation was terrible, I am not a big user of melodyn but I guess I have no choice real bummer

Audio Chord Wizard of band in a box can extract the chords from a whole song, then use one of it`s styles to make your own arragment.
It`s very accurate even in complicated chords.

I think it works better if you put Melodyne as a a 'region fx' before dragging it down - that also gives you the opportunity to clean up the audio before dragging which is advisable if its a bass drum and such like that has bleed from other drums on it- the bleed can trigger other midi samples once moved to midi if you don't. I've used Melodyne with great success recently when it comes to drum replacement.
