  • MOTU 896 MK3 Windows 10 dropouts

I had my system working fine with Windows Vista 64bit (quad core pentium, 6gb ram, Sonar X1 Producer, ASIO drivers) running MOTU 896 MK3 FW with an MUADIO 8 channel mic pre connected via ADAT lightpipe.  After upgrading to windows 10 I am experiencing dropouts during playback.

For a test I try to play the the Sonar tutorial AUDIODEMO.CWP and it (usually) plays fine.  However, there is another sample project that is full of midi sequences and keyboard parts that I can't play at all without dropping out, stuttering and skipping.  I also recorded 8 channel audio (8 drum mics) and tried to play it back and I also get a bunch of stutters, skips etc., though they occur at different parts of the track, so I'm assuming the problem is with the playback and not the recording.

I've gone through every "optimizing windows 10" type thing I can find and nothing seems to fix it.  I've changed every recommended parameter that seems to affect playback and still nothing.  I've also re-installed the latest MOTU driver using their Audio Installer that says it will install the latest driver.  (I also find a thread on how to removed old versions of the driver that may be lurking.) No luck.

Going by everything I've read, it seems Windows 10 should offer good performance for Digital Audio, but I can't get this system to work right.  Again, this exact setup worked flawlessly before under Vista.  The only change is the OS (windows 10) and the new drivers for the MOTU.

Anyone have any ideas on what I can check?

Thanks!

The upgrade took out your FireWire driver and replaced with a new one that does not work well for audio. You need to download the legacy FireWire driver from Microsoft and get it installed. I just went through this with our PA controller PC. After rolling from Win7 to Win10 it could no longer talk to my Presonus 16.4.2, the root cause ended up being the FireWire driver, took a few days to figure that out! This my best guess anyway ... Good luck!

Did the legacy driver help? There was a non-obvious step in the install, pretty sure I wrote it down since I need to apply it to my DAW in the studio. I'll look for it when I wander down there.

Finally got down here to the studio and located my "notes to self", they are kind of terse. The intuitive part (ha ha ha) was where it didn't really install the driver in step (2), that took a while to sort out. Once I did all of this my Presonus came back to life.

Here is what I had to do to make this work on my PA computer:

0) Download 1394_OHCI_LegacyDriver.msi from Microsoft.
1) Right mouse click properties on the INF and set compatibility mode to previous version of Windows.
2) Right mouse click install the INF, but it really does not install, it puts a copy here "C:\Program Files (x86)\1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy)\x64_driver"
3) Open the control panel and "Update Driver ..." then browse to the previous path mentioned in step 2 using the "Have Disk ..." option.
4) Reboot.

You can get the legacy driver using the links specified in here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2970191

The MS installation steps don't work though, you need to do what I did because in Win10 the install doesn't result in the new driver being added to the list of available drivers for some reason.

OK, I'm done yapping. I hope this helps.

Any luck getting it working?

It'll be odd if it turns out to be the legacy driver - maybe he has motherboard-based Firewire ports?  In my case I'm running a brand new PC with a self-installed copy of Windows 10, and an add-on SIIG PCIe firewire card, to a Moto Ultralite MKII Hybrid, and it's working flawlessly.

So, I just installed the legacy drivers and no good.  I've got a PCIe SIIG card as well.  Like I said, this exact setup was working previous under Vista.

I did manage to playback 10 track of recorded audio without a dropout, but when I try to play the Sonar demo, "moonbeams...", a bunch of MIDI tracks, it drops out and squeaks its head off.

I guess I have to keep trying.

Thanks!

Did you upgrade Windows 10 on top of Vista, or was it a clean install? I say this because I had a rather bad experience going the upgrade path. In fact, my new machine came with Windows 7, and in it's factory fresh state wouldn't run Sonar very well.
