In Sonar Professional I set up an automation lane set to MIDI channel 1, controller = 2-Breath.
What am I doing wrong?

Just to check... Do you have MIDI track, with input set to the MIDI expression device and the output to Vienna?

1) Do you have your midi device enabled in preferences?
2) Is your PC receiving data from it? Use midi ox or some other utility to check incoming midi.
3) On soft synths I have 2 tracks, the bottom is midi and the top has an icon of a keyboard + midi. On the keyboard + midi track add an automation lane. In the automation lane select the controller you want - when you select the down arrow towards the bottom of the list you should see your soft synth listed and when you select that there should be a list of controllers and that might be nested, select the appropriate controller.
4) Right click in the box that shows the controller value in the automation lane and select Remote Control. Select Learn and move your foot controller -  that should set it up.

I figured out what was wrong. I had the input on my MIDI track set to my digital piano. Once I changed the input to "all inputs" it recognized the foot pedal. Great news is that I don't even need an automation track!
