Can someone please verify for me that SONAR Artist version 21.10.00 does in fact support SMPTE/MTC?    (BTW which version is "ARTIST" in forum TERMS?  I keep seeing SONAR X3, x2, SONAR and have no idea what they are referring to.)
 
I am just getting back into home studio recording, and things are apparently changing.   I originally had Cakewalk 3.0 and used it with a KORG M1 just for midi work, and recorded through a Tascam 488 portastudio.   Striping a sync code on one track kept everything in sync and Cakewalk 3.0 would follow along with the tape playing all my midi tracks on the M1.
 
NOW:
I have acquired a KORG KRONOS for my workstation, and figured SONAR Artist version would suffice as a modern updated MIDI platform to work with driving the KRONOS keyboard so i have been playing around with the DEMO and like it so far.  KORNOS and SONAR are playing nice.   However, not really wanting to go full blown DAW for recording, I also purchased a standalone MTR Tascam DP 24SD which to my dismay no longer supports MIDI. lol   No idea why they would drop that, but thus my quandry. (my long trip around the barn seems to be getting longer and longer.)  Before I get any deeper, I need to know if SMPTE is supported by the Artist version of SONAR. It appears to be, but just wanting to make sure.   If so, I can obtain a MIDI interface that will generate SMPTE code and just strip one track on the tascam and have SONAR slave along to it driving the KRONOS similar to what I had before.   If not, I may be forced to use the DAW and take the Tascam back.   I would much rather not though.  Anyone else using a setup like this?

Would really appreciate any comments regarding this.  Surely others besides myself are still syncing MIDI devices in some way shape or form.

 
The current incarnation of Sonar is just "Sonar".  It comes in three flavours Artist, Professional and Platinum.

Hello Tim,

That's a tough one trying to sync without MIDI. You could try striping a track with SMPTE then sending that track out of "Effect send 2" meaning the DP-24SD would have to be master driving the computer. Since it's not designed or supported to do so, this is just a suggestion.

So now the question is, what is a good starting point for a SMPTE/MIDI adapter between SONAR and Tascam?
Besides prices and perhaps overkill on ports, this seems like it would work for generating a tone and reading it.

I get the impression you are trying to do something that is unnecessary.
 
The setup you want to achieve is nothing out of the ordinary and many do what you want with no problems (and I've never seen anyone mention SMPTE striping to date).
 
Hopefully someone doing exacly what you need will chime in since I'm not one of them.

For clarity sake...I am trying to do the following.....
 
Sync SONAR Artist with a Tascam DP 24SD which does not have midi like its predecessor.  Without a midi option on the Tascam, I would think my only choice for syncing would be SMPTE but perhaps I am wrong?.  If anyone has other suggestions I am all ears?

I can't answer the main question, but when you see references to X3 etc, these are how the older versions of Sonar were named.
