question: Is there a reason why, if I connect a USB device while Sonar is open, it doesn't appear in the MIDI devices list?
 
For some reason my MAUDIO 1x1 sometimes disappears from the system, especially after the computer has gone to sleep.
So I open Sonar, fire up a virtual instrument, realize the MIDI input is gone. Then I have to close the program unplug the MIDI interface and plug it in again, which is quite inconvenient.
 
Am I missing something there?

Never let your computer go to sleep if you are doing audio work. Seriously.

Yes, allowing a computer to sleep while SONAR is running is not a good idea.

What I meant is, I have no programs running and let's say go out for lunch. When I come back and wake up the PC again, the MIDI connection is gone. Dunno why that happens!

Are you running the High Performance power setting? Do you have 'Screen' set to 'Never' and 'Sleep' set to 'Never'?
 
Any kind of hibernation or sleep can screw up drivers. SONAR loaded or not, I never let the OS sleep or hibernate. I've had too many problems after waking up.

Also check you power settings for USB connections. The system may be shutting them off to save power when there is no activity. Been there.

+1, do a thorough check of the advanced power options. In addition to USB ports not being allowed to be idled, the min/max CPU settings are there as well (both should be set to 100%). Basically do not allow "Windows to decide" what should be running or not.

As I understand, it supposed that Sonar should see when you connect USB Midi. There is some dialog, that should appear, and Sonar can use it without restart. But there is bug and most of time it doesn't work.
