  • Cakewalk won't grab input from Tascam US-16x08

Hi guys, hopefully you can help me out here. I've been running Cakewalk for over a year now with a Tascam US-16x08 interface. All was well until the last couple weeks. Now my interface UI detects the input but Cakewalk doesn't seem to be picking it up. I've tried all the suggestions I can find in the KB, re-installed the Tascam driver, updated Cakewalk, rolled back my Windows updates, but am not getting anywhere. "Contact us" a "web support" is a loop. I've tried switching back and forth between audio drivers in Cakewalk, tried all the input buses, but nothing works now. Are you guys aware of any recent issues similar to this? Thanks!

My backup unit is a Tascam US 4X4.  It still works OK with both Sonar Plat and CbB (latest version).  I am on the latest (1803) Win 10 version.

On the reinstallation of the Tascam Driver.  Did you uninstall, restart the PC, then do a new install?  If you didn't that would be my first suggestion.  If you just reinstall over the existing install, or uninstall/reinstall without a PC restart (reboot) whatever problem can still be there.

Hi, and welcome to this forum.
It sounds like you 16x08 is occupied by another app.
Which version of Cakewalk do you use?
Do you have the latest drivers for your 16x08?
I would use ASIO drivers (if not in use already).
All the best.

With Tascam drivers it's important to follow these steps

- Use the correct ASIO driver found at the Tascam support web site
-Always use the same USB 2.0 port you used for the driver install avoid USB 3.0 if possible.
-Don't turn on or plug the usb cable in until the driver installer tells you to.

If your finding your on board sound card is taking over the audio, then disable it.
Same goes for HDMI audio.
Always make sure the interface is powered on before opening any DAW.

Hey guys, thanks for all the recommendations.

@Fireberd: I'm also on Win 10 1803. I'm running Cakewalk v24.04.1 build 31. I tried uninstalling, rebooting, then re-installing the Tascam driver but no go.

@Zargg: Cakewalk version is above (v24.04.1 build 31), Tascam driver is the most recent on their site (2.11), Cakewalk driver mode is set to ASIO. I see what you're saying about the device being occupied by another app - when I open the Windows Sounds settings the audio drops out in Cakewalk. Same thing happens when I hit the record button on my track.

@Cactus Music: My laptop only has USB 3 ports. Curios though, because it had been working great for over a year with this thing. And the driver install doesn't prompt for a device connection, it just runs through the wizard and closes. Device is always connected and powered on before launching Cakewalk. I can even see the volume level bouncing around in the Tascam UI for my chosen input. But Cakewalk still doesn't receive the audio.

It totally feels like a Cakewalk issue because the Tascam appears to be functioning fine and the audio drops out of Cakewalk as soon as I start messing with the PC sound devices or when I hit record. I think I'll completely uninstall and re-install Cakewalk next. Any other suggestions are more than welcome.

Hmm... had a helpful reply posted but the forum anti-spam seems to have eaten it. Any hosts want to restore one of my replies?

Try to change Windows sounds/communication to the internal sound card when using CbB.

@Zargg: Tried it both ways using the integrated sound card as audio input and output in Windows Sound app as well as the Tascam - no go.

I have the 16x8 too.
Have you done anything recently using the software mixer?
I find it all too easy to get confused with what is routing to where.

Also, could you explain in more detail what is happening?
I understand you hear your inputs - presumably over the headphones - and as soon as you hit record, you hear nothing?

I'm having the same problem.  I can route my windows media player through the Tascam and play it through my studio monitors with no problems, but when I try to play through Cakewalk it shows audio dropout.  Was working about three weeks ago.  I had a Windows update about two weeks ago.  I just tried Cakewalk about three days ago.  I am wondering if the Windows update was the problem.
