  • Very big problem with beginning and endings of exported files in Sonar X1

Michael C.
I use a lot of Vienna Symphonic software with Sonar.  Whenever I use Vienna Ensemble Pro and Mir Pro (Mega convolution reverb), when I export the file as a mix down the reverb in the final .wav file does not start for about 4 seconds, everything prior to it is totally dry, then at the end it completely clips the ending.  When the last note cuts off, so does the reverb.  The only way I can overcome that is to let the recording run for a few seconds and just play and extraneous note on any instrument and delete it later, then I get all the reverb.  Is this a known glitch in X1?  I never upgraded to X2 or 3 so I am thinking of just going to Producer 2015.  Any known issues with file exportation  in that version?

I everyone's opinion (who reads this) what is the best version of Sonar?  I was VERY disappointed with X1 and went back to using Sonar 8 for many projects.

Thanks,
Mike

If you left room at the start of your project before the music begins that would explain the extra time at the start of the exported file. You can simply set your now time to right before the beginning of the audible music then do your export.

For the ending there is a Preferences option (sorry I forget where it is exactly) that allows reverb tails and other such things to ring out before exports stop. However just inserting a silent note or even recording a short but blank audio clip far out enough to accomodate the reverb tail will prevent the end from getting cut off.

I usually leave some room at the start/end of my projects then remove it/create fades in my "mastering" project. It's a lot easier to manage the single file instead of a whole project filled with tracks.

Oh and some VST's have internal options that need to be set to avoid cutting off the tails of the last notes during DAW exports. BFD is (or was) one of them.

I doubt anyone here will say that the current version isn't the best version since X1.  There may be a few who still prefer Sonar 8.  Be careful if you upgrade not to confuse Sonar "Professional" with Producer versions of the past.  The current equivalent of the old Producers is "Platinum".  There has been no Producer since X3.

There's a lot I prefer in Sonar 8.5, too.

Ordinarily I would ask whether you are aware of

S8 : Options/Audio [Advanced]/ (x) Play Effect Tails After Stopping
X1 : Edit/Preferences/Audio/Playback and Recording/(x) Play Effect Tails After Stopping

but you say it takes 4 seconds after the first note before the reverb even starts. That is a new one on me. X1 was the first of a new generation, but basic audio works.

Do you have this in S8 too? Or only in X1?

I completely misunderstood what was being said. I have no idea why your reverb would not render properly in such an odd way.

Are you do a fast export or real-time export? Whichever one you're using, try the other one.

FWIW SONAR X1 is nowhere near as stable as X3, let alone Platinum.

The note cut short at the end can be solved as follows:

1. Before you export, zoom out so that you see the entire composition in the PRV.

2. Drag the mouse cursor across the top of the ruler (where the beat and bar numbers are)
The grey area you draw will be the area that gets exported. Make sure the end is generously long.

This does not solve the problem of the reverb starting so late. I have tested with a piano sound in X1 and Sonitus:fx Reverb. I cannot reproduce the problem.

Could it be your sound starts slowly and for this reason the reverb is just not noticable yet?
