  • Can SONAR record DAT (tape) subcode/metadata when recording digitally via S/PDIF?

Hi there!

I've been trying to search for a solution to this question for a while.

I have a few old DAT master tapes that I'd need to transfer digitally to a more modern format. I'm planning to do this by using the S/PDIF output of my Sony DAT deck (DTC-790) to my RME Fireface 800. I've manage to synchronize the digital audio without any problems between the DAT deck optical (digital) out and the RME S/PDIF input. The RME sound card should also support incoming subcode information from DAT and other similar digital sources ("TMS" checkbox is checked from the Fireface Settings).

I'd need to know if it's possible to use SONAR to record the track marker subcode/metadata along with the S/PDIF digital audio, i.e. by adding timeline markers automatically to match the original track change points on the master tape when recording? I have all the Producer Editions from 8.5.3 to Platinum installed on my workstation, so the version number shouldn't be a problem.

If SONAR is not able to do this, has anybody got any idea where I could find a program that would be able to record the track marker subcode/metadata along with the audio over S/PDIF?

Thanks a lot in advance!

I haven't got a solution regarding SONAR yet, but at least MAGIX's Samplitude Pro X2 Suite was able to record the track index/TMS/subcode (=metadata in general) from the Sony DAT deck over S/PDIF digital connection, spot-on.

I read from RME's own forums that only WaveLab and Samplitude Pro are known to be able to record the subcode data, and I also found out that WaveLab had dropped its support for the metadata recording which is somewhat incomprehensible, but I guess I need to get a Samplitude Pro X2 license if SONAR nor WaveLab can't do the job ...

This feature shouldn't be too hard to implement IMHO, and it would surely help out audio engineers/audio restoration professionals who are doing audio transfers from sources that send track info & other metadata over S/PDIF - i.e. the majority of MiniDisc/CD/DAT/DCC decks and what have you not.

You could always put it forward as a feature request
