  • How to automatically slide clip left when deleting a section? (p.2)

+1 to a batch process that you can adjust threshold for. Then you can simply review tracks for content and ease the process.

As an aside, you mentioned track length, implying cost is based only on time and not word count? If so, another thing you can do is bounce the track so it is one clip then stretch-edit to shorten it (ctrl-drag the right edge, and bounce again). In general, people can understand 3 times as quickly as they speak, but don't go overboard with such if you choose this (can probably save 10-20% right there).

This too is a good idea, once I've done the initial process. Yes, the transcribers around the world charge based on varying schemas. You can find people offering 10 or 15 or 20 minutes of transcribing for $5, but it's important to find out whether their offer is $5 for 20 minutes of work time or for a 20 minute audio track. Rule of thumb is 3 hours transcribing an hour of audio, but it can be less. Factors include how clear the vocal is, number of speakers (dialogues require more time formatting), etc.

And yes, overboard — making it sound like one of those hyper-speed commercial disclaimers at the tail end of radio commercials would be usery. I just don't want the guy paying for dead air time. :)

I am not at the console, but I thought there was a "remove silence" edit available.

EDIT: Never mind.  It does not delete the hole.

Thanks, Craig. This is a timely post; I am editing daily podcasts and have the same requirements- going to do the time compression as well; I didn't think of that.

Please help as this is how I have always done it, but now Sonar is not pulling every thing left, meaning all the way to the beginning of the selection. It only deletes to the amount of the clip selected. If there is blank space to the left of the clip, it does not delete to the beginning of the selection. Only to the beginning of the clip. Something's changed in Lexington release.

Any helpful insight as to any settings that will rectify this is very much appreciated. Thanks (see images below).

Wally, I've ONLY started using cut special since Lexington. But I verify that this is the way it works for me.

However, as a workaround, I just checked and verified that if I drag/expand the clip left to where I want the resulting clip to actually start, I can get Sonar to do what you want, albeit with a 2nd step.

Are you sure it used to do that automatically? That would have been very limiting and would prevent many different uses.

Chamlin,
Yes. I've been doing long-form audio editing since around 2001 using Cakewalk products exclusively. I cut while listening Sometimes there are blank spaces between where I've recorded the VO artist and picked it back up again. Ripple deleting FROM - TO, whether or not there was any clip there or not, always worked properly. I can drag as well, but it slows my workflow as well.
Anyway, I've submitted to tech support.
On a good note, when selecting a clip, then using Edit|Select|thru=end (Alt+Shift+F6), the actual clips in the track are selected and not just the time.

...this just in...
The problem persists when performing a cut (with delete hole) across multiple tracks. That's a big problem that needs fixing because it will throw off any clips you have synchronized down the line. Not all tracks contain complete clips.

Wally, as I read your first post, I'm having a hard time clearly understanding what's happening and want to make sure it's clear for all of us.

Would you be willing to rewrite it for greater clarity?

I rarely use this feature, but from Wally's post it looks like "Delete Hole" does not work if selecting a region from the timeline (I just checked this and making a timeline selection doesn't select any clips). This can be "sort of" worked around by selecting tracks first, then time selection, then deleting (must select tracks first, or a new time selection is made when selecting tracks - side issue, i.e. timeline selection must be made last).

Second issue is "Delete hole" only works with data in that track. For example, if selecting all tracks and deleting measures 3-5, only tracks with data actually in measures 3-5 will shift left. From an arrangement perspective this throws everything off kilter, since tracks with data shift, and the rest do not.

"Ripple Deleting" is a feature that is common for mating up data in tracks when a section is deleted (what the OP asked). Such a feature is necessity for video software, since no one is going to sit still and wait 2 minutes if the TV goes blank

I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who has clips scattered around his projects and not one big long clip(s) on each track.
1) Put two clips on a track with empty space between.
2) Select a portion of the track that includes a portion of the clip on the left, but none of the clip on the right.
3) Cut Special and in the dialog box, select everything BUT "Shift by Whole Measures"
4) Click OK.
Works as expected. Deletes the hole and moves the clip on the right over to the left.
NOW, with the same two clips...
1) Select a portion of the track that includes a portion of the clip on the RIGHT, but none of the clip on the left.
2) Cut Special and in the dialog box, select everything BUT "Shift by Whole Measures"
4) Click OK.
DOES NOT work as expected. Deletes the beginning of the clip on the right that you've selected, but does not move the clip over. Only truncates the clip.
NOW, do the same thing with two or more tracks selected, but with only track one being the selection to be deleted and you will see that any clips to the right in track 2 (in either scenario) WILL NOT shift to the left.

Is this clear? I hope it is to tech support. I am wondering if this happens to anyone else.
