More about MIDI-to-Audio with SONAR.

"If you want to take matters further, Melodyne Editor ($399) does polyphonic note detection, as well as MIDI conversion, and the multitrack Melodyne Studio ($699) has additional MIDI features, such as adding MIDI pitch-bend data for pitch drift and modulation, envelope creation, and velocity curves. However, note that polyphonic conversion to MIDI requires some work to clean everything up. Celemony has posted an informative video about extracting polyphonic MIDI data from guitars on its website’s Help Center."

Is this still correct in Version 4 Craig. It's not mentions on their site or help files as far as I can see, and nothing came up when  using Studio4 with Sonar yesterday. Event list just had note and velocity.

Email from Celemony.
"Melodyne studio 4 does not offer this feature. "

One step back amongst some steps forward.

I think it would have been nice to let folks know that converting audio to Midi  also works very good with converting Analog Bass parts to Midi Bass Parts
Kenny

Somehow, I was able to get a, more or less,  rhythmically-similar (ONLY) Midi track by converting my analog bass-line to MIDI.
P.S. A lot of compliments for Sonar about it but no precise instructions.

Way to go Cakewalk! Rolling this audio to midi feature in the way you have makes Sonar that much more sophisticated and elegant. Less steps, less clutter; mission accomplished. I love it.

Hello WUTP ,

A couple of things off the top of my head ..

IMHO the Analog Bass conversion to Midi  can work surprisingly well ...

Here is one example of the proof ...

http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=13308818

A quick rundown of what I did .....
I opened up SONAR to my original song project . Added one instance of Dimension Pro ..set it to a Bass patch ...
Then I took the mono Bass guitar part that I had played and slid it over to the midi track of the Dimension Pro
The ARA conversion did its thing ...
Dimension Pro played the midi part one octave down , so I bumped up the octave to match my Analog Bass guitar part ....
I exported both files my original Bass part and midi  bass part out of SONAR ..then I opened up another instance of SONAR and imported both the files in as a new project ....

I feel that  it very important that I say what I am about to say next  ....

I have not edited anything "what so ever " other than shortening the length of the Bass part of both Bass's in the new SONAR project that I have created .( above MP 3 example file ...)
I have not edited any of the audio or any of the midi conversion.
This means I did  no edits in the piano roll .....absolutely no midi edits at all ..Nada ...other than shortening song length

It is that way because I want you , or any other interested folks to be able to hear the midi bass conversion ...warts and all ....

The last thing I did to prepare for my 128 bit MP3 example was to pan both Bass parts to opposite ends of the stereo field .
Analog Bass = left in headphones Dim Pro = Right in Headphones ...opposite for speakers...
I did that so it would be easy for anyone to be able to do a valid comparison of the audio to midi conversion ...

My original bass part plays out a couple of seconds longer due to having done a split clips near the ending in my song project that didn't slide over for the ARA conversion ...

While in SONAR i did not use any plugs or anything when I did my export of both Bass's ...
I was having my morning coffee and I wanted to get this file up as fast as possible and have it be an honest representation of the previous claims I have made about the ARA conversion process working very well for Bass...

In closing ,
it is not my desire to prove a point or come off as some kind of a know it all or any other type of internet Bad A$$
In my mind I think it is pretty  awesome that this type of stuff can be done now a days ...
I'm honestly genuinely happy that I can learn how to do these new type of things .

My short term goal is to achieve a satisfactory musical result using the current tools I have gotten already in SONAR ...

all the best ,

Kenny

Try a different Melodyne algorithm, it may be set to percussive. IIRC, the audio-to-MIDI conversion uses the default set in Melodyne. Open any clip in Melodyne and set the default algorithm.

Kenny, have you tried the midi file plying upright bass at all? I can't see why it wouldn't be as successful, and the playing technique would be more natural than with a keyboard.

Yes I have , just now . It sounds great .
You know Kamikaze , it's funny this morning when I made the MP3 example I went for a quick Dim Pro Bass sound ...
BTW , I played a real Bass for my audio Bass parts ...a 4 string Yamaha ...
While I was messing around a few mins ago I auditioned a few Acoustic Bass sounds VIA Dim Pro in my song ...
That little experiment turned out to be somewhat of an ear opener ...
I almost hate to say this ...I think I like the midi Upright Bass sound better than what I had played on a real Bass

Cool,  I'm not good with the bass, but my playing sounds far more natural than a keyboard ever did. I'm  keyboardless now. When I play monophonic sounds from my Midi Sax, they sound far more natural than the my keyboard playing ever did. Bass synths seem to respond well, but bass guitar sounds just ok. Looking at the prices of high quailty bass guitar sample sets last year, I thought why not just use the money for a bass, and learn how nail the playing style, with racking etc. I can't do the same thing with an upright (especially being fretless) with size and cost, micing issues, but the bass guitar can capture it, so this looks an appealing way to get a performance from a sample set of upright.

Hey Kamikaze ,

If you can swing an Electric Bass at some point , I would say go for it ...
Even during the learning stages it would certainly bring a lot to the table for you ..
Plus SONAR doesn't seem to care one bit what it may say on the head-stock

You Know what ? I took your advice
I just  spent a couple of hours with my tune and I did a fresh ARA conversion to my electric Bass part .
Dialed up a Full Acoustic Bass sound in Dimension Pro , spent some time in the piano roll doing edits ...
Got to say that after doing all that the Acoustic Upright sound brought my tune to a better place ...
It's a Keeper . ( still have to work on the rest of the stuff lol )

thanks for the suggestion ,

Kenny
