I think the bakers should consider one method or another to address stereo track width control (which was easy in the old days when stereo was really 2 mono tracks).

1) Continue to stand behind channel tools for this task
2) Give us stereo to true MONO routing
3) Give us a width meter for stereo tracks on console and track views

I have been having issues with Channel Tools lately and I hate that it takes up a slot in the FX bin, plus there is no way to see the width settings of the track without opening the CT Vst.  So, like right there next to pan or integrated with pan should be another dial that displays WIDTH of the track (only when it is a stereo track) and then you can pan the width hard right or hard left or anything in between.

You would be surprised how much control this would allow in the stereo field during mixing.  It just opens up the control of your stereo field for instrument separation.  Yes, I know you can do this with CT, but as mentioned it performs the width function but not with an intuitive GUI.  The 2 mono tracks for stereo was all we have back in the day and this panning and width idea was used all the time during mixing (on a desk, not a DAW).

So, hopefully, starting this thread might bring this to the attention of the bakers.

Right now you already have a two options.
1. Split to two mono tracks.
2. Create an FX chain of the channel tools with any knob you like and put it in the ProChannel.

But I agree that it would be nice to do this a little better. My E-MU Patchmix app for my desktop card actually does it nicely; the fader/track is stereo but there are individual pan controls for the L and R source.

ct is a prime candidate for implementing as a pc module

FYI, There is a prochannel version of Channel Tools already available in Sonar Platinum\fx chain presets\prochannel

I tend to agree that this could be easier to access. i also think that channel tools could be a little more user friendly especially in the width control area. I find that the sliders in the bottom right are difficult to use.

Perhaps your suggestion might get more traction if you put in a feature request.

OK... so my point wasn't that we need to be able to do this (I know we can), I just think there is a better to implement this feature for mixing.  I do not like or use Pro Channel so everything I do needs to be easy to get at in Console view (I am old school).  I need the FX bins for my goto COMPS and EQs.  The sliders doesn't give the same intuitive feel as would a nested PAN implementation would yield (at least for me) and it would always be there.  As far as I concerned, the delays in CT is useless to me(I implement delays with plugins in busses - like a send idea).

I don't like 180 degree reverb so I use CT on my reverb tracks and I use CT on stereo instrument tracks where applicable.

Just wish there was a more elegant way of implementing this channel width in Sonar.

Yes Scook.. something like that but I would prefer a round dial where the outer circumference would who the pan point and the inner the width.  But same exact idea..... did the bakers ever weigh in on this?

+1

This should be a standard part of the track view, just as volume and pan are.

This request has happened before and I came up with an FX Chain for putting in the ProChannel that had a reasonably friendly interface IIRC. Maybe I'll find it an do it as a tip of the week.
