yet another crack attack vector, and possibly more serious as it will also contain some (hopefully not too sensitive) user data, unlike just cracking the driver... god i hate pace/ilok, it's such a con...

iLok already has these user accounts, so there isn't any new attack vector here.  I'm sure a bunch of people will complain about having to be connected to the internet to use software, but it may lower the support costs for iLok using developers.  Might even convince a few of the hardware key required vendors to open up and support hardware or cloud.  While I don't think I'd use it, it may be useful for a few users and a few developers.

Setting security issue aside, I like the idea of the cloud-based iLok. I would very much appreciate if my ilok licenses did not depend on my host or dongle. The proper architecture with a local cache and hosted keys could work very well and essentially overcome the need to have recovery issues with broken dongles or hardware issues.

The problem is the local cache, I can't see developers being so keen to allow the local license to work for very long without requiring it touch base with the servers.  We will have to see what the details are.  I expect it may be controllable by each developer, so there may be a lot of different policies.

You have to remember that your aren't iLok's customer, the developers are.  For them it's not a con.  For end users it's something else, rarely pleasant.

iLok has only presented me with one problem in over 6 years of using it. A specific update of the manager would not install and required support which they provided in less than 24 hours.

Maybe the $30 annual insurance I pay is the reason why iLok has been beddy beddy good to me.

I know iLok gets very little love here, but I too have only had one problem in seven years of use which was sorted out quickly.  Still, I can see why some people choose not to use it.
