I've been a Sonar PE user since version 4 and I've never encountered a problem like this. I am now using and learning X3 and can't figure this problem out.
 
While working in Piano Roll View  I can not get the notes to snap to anything smaller than 1/8 while using the Smart Grid/Snap to Grid feature.
 
The Smart Grid/Snap to Grid feature defaults to 1/8 and even though I change it to 1/16, 1/32, 1/64 etc. I can not get a note to snap to anything on the timeline smaller than 1/8 while in Piano Roll View.
 
It appears to work in Track View but not in Piano Roll View although even in Track View if i toggle the Smart Grid feature of/on it defaults to 1/8 again.
 
In Piano Roll View the only way for me to draw or move a note on the timeline smaller than 1/8 is to turn the Smart Grid/Snap to Grid feature off but then the note is not exactly on 1/16, or 1/32 because it was done freehand.
 
In addition, every time I toggle Smart Grid off and then on again it defaults back to 1/8 no matter where I had it previously set.
 
Another problem I'm having while in Piano Roll View is when I move a note it moves the notes "By" 1/8 instead of "To" 1/8 even though I have the toggle setting for the Smart Grid set on "Move To".
 
Can't figure this one out. Does anyone have a solution?

The PRV has a local snap grid if you look to the right.
Else you can open the main SnapGrid, turn off Smart Grid and select a fixed resolution of your choice.

Thanks so much jpetersen! I'm still learning the new format in the X version of Sonar. Although I purchased X1 and X3 I've been using Sonar 8 PE because I didn't want to learn the new UI. Now I'm finally ready to take the time to learn the new format but have to admit it's really affecting my workflow in a negative way.

I'm not so sure about that now but hopefully I'll see the light in the future. It seems like tasks that used to take 1 or 2 clicks now take 3 or 4 clicks to accomplish. Having to constantly click and change tools to do things drives me crazy. Before there was just one tool that did it all, the mouse pointer. I know there's the "Smart" tool but even that doesn't do everything. You have to click one tool to select a note, another to move that note, another to adjust velocity of the note, another to shorten/lengthen the note. Arrrrrggghhh!

Smart Tool can do all of those:
- Left-click to select or right-click and drag to Lasso one ore more.
- Click and drag the center of a note to move it.
- Click and drag the left end to change the start time.
- Click and drag the right end to change the duration.
- Click and drag the upper edge of a note to adjust velocity.
 
As you hover over these various hotspots on a note, you'll get the corresponding tool cursor.
 
You can also:
- Alt+Left-click to draw a note at the current draw duration.
- Left-click and drag to draw a note of any duration.
- Double-click to open note Properties.
- Right-click to delete a note.
- Alt+left-click to split a note.
- Ctrl+Left-click and drag to copy a note or a selection
 
There are probably more, but those are the ones i know of the top of my head and use most frequently. I almost never change tools.

Thanks brundlefly! That's good information and I'll have to try those. Knowing these things will certainly make things much easier for me. I'm used to the old Sonar versions and I get impatient while trying to learn the new version because everything has changed and it seems I'm spending more time learning and little time creating. I just hate spending so much re-learning things I've already learned years ago.  I'll eventually learn the new program and I'm sure I'll be fine thanks to Garrigus's book and forum members like you.

The smart tool is fine for when you have a handful of notes on the screen.
 
But once your song develops and your screen is full of notes, you find yourself constantly zooming in and out, just to locate those hotspots.
 
I also still use and much prefer the Sonar 8.5 interface.  Little S-E-D triangle of keys directly under your left hand to select the tools. Hit "Alt" from any tool and you can move your note. "Alt+Ctrl" for copy-move. Easy. And overall more respectful of screen real-estate.

smart grid has its uses, don't give up on using it. it is a very powerful feature.
im still learning new stuff about it myself.
in my opinion that's the beauty of Sonar, there are so many things to learn about it doesn't get boring.
sure other DAW's are like that as well, I just find the features in Sonar very Deep in editing....
and easy to use, not to steep of a learning curve.

I printed off the instructions that brundlefly wrote in his above post about the Smart Toll and it works like a charm. Goofy me....I was switching from one tool to another every time I wanted to perform a different task. I guess that makes me a "Not-So-Smart" tool.
