Can someone tell me if I'm doing something wrong, and/or how to fix, (other than note by note), when editing midi synth data, it often (but not always) seems to have 2 layers of each note? i.e., if I delete a note there's another one underneath it?

Thanks for the reference Zargg, much appreciated, apparently by the time I could read through all the posts on how undupe may or doesn't work, or how to experiment to try to work around it, and/or learn a programing language, I could have gone through it note by note and fixed it. LOL.  For now I'm using my time left going note by note that need editing, and almost done, and will look for how to avoid it in future. It doesn't seem to affect the levels where there's 2 notes, just annoying when editing and changing a note durations.
 
I'm not sure this is included in lists of posts, Ill read them later, but I guess a better question may be,

Maybe you have some sort of Midi echo going on between Sonar and your keyboard ?
 

Most likely:
 
1. Keyboard sending on two channels.
or
2. Keyboard connected by both MIDI DIN cable and USB, and track input set to All Inputs instead of a specific MIDI port.
 
It's always best to set track inputs to a specific port and channel to avoid this regardless of what's coming in on various MIDI ports.

This is likely part of what I'm doing wrong, i.e., selecting all/Omni for the specific midi controller device I'm recording with, (via USB midi) which also shows up in midi device preference as a sequence of 5 same name but separately numbered midi I/O devices, which I'm not certain which to activate, so I activate them all, but use only first in list for track inputs. Ill try a specific channel instead of all/omni, and perhaps select only 1 of 5 available shown in midi device I/O preferences.
 
I thought possibly inserting as a synth instrument track it was also overlaying the midi track info on the single track.
 
Is there any advantage to using one over the other of my both available MIDI DIN or MIDI USB connection?  
 
Anyway guess I have some midi homework to do LOL

I have used both, with luck. If your Audio Interface has MIDI and is stable, use that. If not, use USB.
Others will certainly know better

Like Ken, I'd be inclined to use the DIN connection unless you need it for some external hardware that doesn't have a USB MIDI port. But it probably doesn't make a huge difference one way or the other. You might just want to go with whichever cable routing is cleanest.

My AI is an RME UFX, the controller/sequencer on hand is an AKAI Max25, which has also has DAW interface programs built in for many (25 + generic) common DAWs, except unfortunately Sonar, and not certain which protocol program may be the most compatible with Sonar protocols, unfortunately currently my knowledge of what the differences in these midi protocols may imply is limited, only that it seems to be recognized and work well (except double notes), with the default program it loads referring to Akai's Connect driver/software).
 
Does Sonar adhere to any other specific/common midi protocols? Some listed include Mackie, Pro-tools, Logic, Cubase, Live, a "generic" setting and a number of others.

You are good to go AI vise. I have a 15+ year old M-Audio Radium 49 connected via MIDI on my RME Ucx, and select (in my case) RME Ucx MIDI 1 (not in front of my studio pc now, so this is from memory. And a bad one) in and out. Have had no problems with it at all, besides as you say, that there are no included "setup" for the knobs and faders.
