2) Nothing in right speaker.
1) the relative level between left and right channel is determined by the pan law you have set in Sonar.
There are several ways the relative volumes can vary when you turn the pan control, eg:
i) -3db, 100% left and 100% right uses just 1 speaker, so the centre position is adjusted down by 3db to match the overall volume level. The result is the signal does not vary in amplitude as the pan position is changed. This is considered the "normal" for a pan control.
ii) Balance, at centre position, both outputs are 100%. Turn the control left turns down the right hand channel.. This is normal for a stereo channel.
iii) Many other combinations of preset levels and curves, some specific to certain tasks, beyond the scope of this post.
This is the reason that mixes often sound different when exported to different systems, especially where hardware mixers have been used where the pan law cannot be changed (or even determined). Different pan laws result in different levels.
If you're setting the pan to 100% left and still hearing signal in the right channel then you either have an FX send that is returning signal to the right channel somewhere else (a bus) or the RME Totalmix channels are not panned 100% left/right.
