  • AD2 stops playing when I click on another synth icon

Hello, I’m wondering if anyone can help me with something that I can’t figure out.  I asked this question once before but didn’t get any response, so I ask again with a little more detail. It has to do with AD2 and the fact that when I open another synth, or click on a synth track in CV or TV, or even on a synth icon in synth rack, AD2 stops playing.

1. Fire up Sonar.
2. Create a new project.
3. Record an audio track.
4. Go to synth rack and add an instance of AD2.
5. Pick a kit, and a midi file of choice.
6. Press play, listen to the wonderful music.
7. Go to Synth rack, add another synth, like SI Bass.
8. Press play, listen to the wonderful music.
9. Click on SI Bass in the synth rack to open it, and AD2 stops working.
10. The only way to get AD2 to play again is to click on the AD2 icon in the synth rack?

I thought maybe “give all keystrokse to plug in,” might do something, but it doesn’t.  AD2 is the only instrument that stops playing.  All the others continue playing.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Hi Jesse,
I have the times that try as you described it . the problem does not occur with me .have you ever tried AD2 to run via a midi and audio track? Maybe it runs better .

Try inserting soft synths from the insert menu rather than the synth rack and see if this doesn't solve your problem.

Hey, thanks for trying.

Tomas and Lynn, I think you are suggesting the same thing, and I tried it, but I still get the same results.

Puzzling!

Maybe I have a setting wrong in AD2.

Actually we're not talking about the same thing.  You can insert a soft synth in several ways; either as a simple instrument track which combines an audio and MIDI track, or, as Tomas suggested, with an instrument track AND MIDI track on two different tracks.  Also, synths can be inserted via the insert menu at the top of the screen, or via the synth rack, as you seem to be doing.  I'm just saying, try inserting your synths from the insert menu instead of the synth rack.  Best of luck.

Are you playing the AD2 tracks from within the "Beats" tab of AD2?  If so, you are only previewing the material.  You should drag the Midi pattern into a midi (or simple instrument track) and use Sonar's transport to play it.

Hello Dave, thanks for the advice.  I'm not actually using the midi files in AD 2.  I am using another synth midi out to play the drums.  AD2 work fine when using the supplied midi files, just not when receiving input from another synth.

I apologize for not including that little tidbit in my first post.

I will continue to try to figure this out.  Thanks, I really appreciate everyone's help.

In your list of 1 to 10 I saw no mention of placing a drum midi file in your project..
Are you using a different drum synth to trigger AD2 , yet ,you are not getting sound?

A few things may be going on ...
If you are auditioning midi files from your browser you can set the media preview tab to use AD2 for your drum midi's ...
It may help to have AD2 's internal drum mapping set to GM if that is what the midi file happens to be ..

If you are using SD 3 for beats or any other VST drum plug , when they have self contained beats and midi files that can be slid into the project you can just slide them over to the AD2 midi track ...

Or you may need to set your input on your AD2 track to what ever synth or plugs out put you may be using ...

those are a couple of thoughts of  common reasons why you may be having issues ..anyway some one else may chime in if that doesn't cover it

I think I can reproduce what you're describing here, Jesse (which is not what was listed in your first post).

This is the first I've heard of driving AD2 from a synth, so I'm interested in the concept.

I just setup AD2 driven by Kirnu (arpeggiator) and that works.  Next I added DimPro and drew in some notes to it's midi input clip.

I played some notes into Kirnu in "Hold" mode and AD2 repeats non-stop the sequence it receives from Kirnu.

->  Now if I start the transport to get DimPro to play its midi clip, AD2 stops playing.

I'd also like to know why, since this is out of my league.

Jesse, out of curiosity, what synth are you using to drive AD2 ?

EDIT :  For some reason, I can still play Kirnu, just not with "Hold" on.  With it off, AD2 plays Kirnu's output (while I have to keep holding the notes) and DimPro plays its midi clip.

Since the MIDI is being fed from elsewhere, I am curious if the "Always Echo Current Track" is a factor. Once the track loses focus the echo will shut off.
