Hello, thanks for taking the time to help me.  I hope that someday I may return the favor.

Kenny, I apologize for not being more specific in my OP. I'm getting sound out of AD2 because I am driving it with another synth so I don't need to drag a midi clip into the track.  AD2 seems to work well when I sync start with my daw and I am using a provided midi file.

Paul P, thank you for trying this, sorry I didn't mention before that I was using another synth to drive AD2.  The great thing is that you can use any synth that has midi out to drive AD2.  When I load the instance of AD2 in the synth rack I always choose the synth I want to drive AD2 in the drop down menu under "display automation on."  So you have experienced what I have been trying to figure out.  Thank you for that.

Mettelus, you may be on to something.  I am not able to check right now, but I will certainly check the setting concerning echo.  I will find where that choice is and see if there is an alternate setting that changes what is happening.  Thanks for trying to help me connect the dots.

You are all great pals, and when I get a chance to look into this tomorrow i will get back to you!

I don't understand this.  About the drop down, Help says :

Display Automation On:

{Automation track drop-down menu}.  By default, the automation data for a synth appears on the synth track associated with that synth. Use this menu to choose any other track to display the data on, including tracks that are already displaying other synth's automation data.

(And this field is empty on my system and clicking the arrow causes nothing to "drop down".  I don't know how to get a track to appear).

How do you assign a synth in this field ?

Ok, it is looking like Mettelus was correct.  I have checked a couple of projects and so far it seems that it was the "input echo" thang.  I would have never thought it was that, but so far it seems to be the OBVIOUS choice.

I learned something and I am thankful that you all took the time to help.

I'm sorry for leading you all down a rabbit hole, especially you Kenny; but oh yeah, life is good....right?

To Paul P., I can't explain why your drop down menu for the automation doesn't show any synths.  I have several synth in every project and they all show up under that menu.  Have you tried adding more than one synth to see if there are choices?

Thanks again,

Thanks Jesse, I just tried it again and for some reason I now do get the list of active synths.  But I can't help but think that this is not the intended use of this field.  What is your reasoning for controlling a synth through the automation outputs of the driving synth ?  Why not just route the output of the first synth to the input of the second synth ?

More generally, what is the meaning of "automation data".  Why would one want to have the automation data of one synth appear in the track of another synth ?
