I have some MIDI that I exported from Finale, and imported into Sonar X1 Producer.  It's just two tracks. One of the tracks is a piano that TruePianos has no issues with.  Cool.  The other is a vocal lead that I'll use as scratch, and I instantiated (ooh, fancy technical term) Dimension Pro and put the MIDI right on that line. Spectacular.  Except it doesn't actually play back.  DimPro responds to my keyboard controller - if I jam along it plays that. But it won't play the MIDI that was imported.

I dragged that MIDI clip to another instrument (SampleTank XT) and Sampletank has no issues.  So SampleTank and TruePianos both seem to get along with Finale's MIDI. It's just DimPro.

I did look through the event list for anything weird, and I don't see anything weird.  The MIDI came from Finale PrintMusic 2011, rather than the full Finale suite.  I've posted the project folder (complete with the original MIDI file) right here  (it's just a few kB download).  If someone has a moment and would like to look at it and tell me what I done wrong, I'd be grateful.

edit: broken link has been fixed.

Beuller?

I asked on the Finale forum as well, nobody there has said anything.  Guess I'll send email to Cake and MM support.

Dimension Pro responds to MIDI CC#7 data as volume. Make sure you double check your exported MIDI file for any loose MIDICCs that could be causing a conflict. Best, Chad

OK I figured it out.  There's a controller called "RPN: 0" that appears at the start of each MIDI clip that apparently Dim Pro can't handle.  I have to do these steps:

1.) Import the MIDI to plain old MIDI tracks
2.) Delete the "RPN: 0" events from each MIDI clip
3.) Instantiate Dim Pro (or other synths)
4.) Move the clips to the instruments you want them on, or otherwise route the MIDI tracks to the instruments.

If you route a track to a Dimension Pro instance and start playback, and if Dim Pro processes that controller, then the synth is "tainted" and won't play anything back.

RPN: 0 has a range of 0-16383 (14 bits).  The Finale MIDI has a value set in the 1900-2000 range, and it's different for every track.  I have done almost no experimenting to figure out what it does to Dimension Pro but at this point I don't care.  It works.

Seems like it's either a bug in Dim Pro because no other instruments have this problem, or Dim Pro is the only instrument on earth that processes the event correctly and it's a bug in Finale.  I'd have to go with the former.
