After a couple of software companies stiffed me (NI Kore, Muse etc etc) I actually got my old hardware out - now my total set up is based around hardware - I have also managed to buy a number of hardware synths, although this is getting more difficult now as the prices are going up all the time.
So for me, Hardware lives!
My main ones are a Sequential Circuits Six Trak, A number of old Siel units such as the Orchestra and Dk80, Oberheim Matrix and OB12 plus  Quasimidi Sirus and Raven, plus a few more!

I forgot to mention that I also got off a friend recently a Korg Delta - wow what a great synth - never really heard of the Delta until I was offered it - have had great fun getting into it and incorporating it into the set up

Seems I've bought every soft synth known to man some days
But I still use my Motif ES rack - great sounds & less hassle to get them

I bought a Roland A 880 midi patch bay back then and everything was routed through that.

Mine is still going strong! Love it.

I have one of these - good piece of kit and a shame they stopped making it!
If you want anything like this now, you have to buy second hand - picked up a few like that (all varying makes!) to hook all my synths up to my Motu Express which in turn links to my Computer

I said above that you have to buy second hand if you want a midi patching / splitter  solution - well blow me down with the proverbial feather, but I was browsing Sweetwater just now for something and found this.

Although I do use vsti's for certain things, I've got 8 or 9 hardware synths/keyboards that I prefer to use wherever and whenever possible. The "hands on" appeal is a big thing, and if they offer up the type of sounds I'm in need of, then they win!

If you only need to drive 4 devices, there's a 1->4 splitter for just 50 bucks.

It's become a niche market nowadays, but a small company called MIDI Solutions still makes 5-pin DIN MIDI devices, most of which are powered right off the MIDI port itself (no batteries or wall-warts!). I use their 2-to-1 MIDI Merger so I can drive my VoiceLive Touch from two keyboards onstage.
